Location: UT : Maple Canyon By: mike cork When: Oct 13, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: Hey - a buddy and I are headed out this way in a week and plan to do a day or two at Maple Canyon. A few first timer questions:
1) given our limited time, what 2 or 3 crags would be ideal to check out this time of year for the 5.11-5.12 climber? Anything that gets decent sun?
2) any recommended lodging in the area? we'll be flying into SLC in the evening and need a place to stay semi-near Maple.
3) food/drink...any nearby joints that we should check out? From Maple we're headed SE to do so... more >>

Location: WY : Ten Sleep Canyon By: mike cork When: Jun 16, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: Tzilla - thanks, we'll check those areas out. As for Spearfish, yeah, we're checking it out for a few days en route to Ten Sleep (we're flying into Rapid City). Based on your warning about the sharp holds, maybe we should have planned our destinations in reverse order. Then again, I hear Ten Sleep is a good time over the July 4th weekend...can't wait.

Location: WY : Ten Sleep Canyon By: mike cork When: Jun 10, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: Aaron - that's awesome about the new guidebook! Thanks for all the hard work...can't wait to check it out.
Given the timing of our trip, we prob won't have a chance to get the guide before heading out there. That said, can anyone recommend a good area for our first day on the rock? Something relatively easy to get to with a wide range of difficulty (5.9 to low 5.12). We're from the south, so we can deal with some heat (if that makes a difference in crag recommendation).
Thanks! Mike

Location: WY : Ten Sleep Canyon By: mike cork When: Mar 4, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: So...we're planning on heading out to Ten Sleep over the 4th of July weekend (can't wait), but nary a guidebook is to be found. I'm sure I'll be able to find one once I get into town, but I was hoping to have something to peruse before we show up. I've called every place I've heard of that carries Huey's guide, hoping to get one shipped to me in Atlanta, but they are all out and don't know when they'll be getting new stock.
Any info appreciated...
Thanks, Mike

Location: AL : Griffin Falls By: mike cork When: Feb 5, 2008 | view comment >> | Comments: If you visit Griffin Falls following some time at Sand Rock, be prepared to re-adjust your rating scale...Sand Rock is soft in comparison. We did a few routes on the Breakfast Wall, and they were certainly challenging, requiring good footwork and slab climbing technique on lichen covered rock...not my cup of tea.
Knife Crack is really fun, and the bolted routes to the right (Power Windows, Smashing Pumpkins) are good. If I go back, it will be to try Steeplechase, a good looking line on the be... more >>

Location: AL : Sand Rock : Sun Wall : Misty (5.10c/d) By: mike cork When: Feb 5, 2008 | view comment >> | Comments: The scene of my first whipper! It's a reasonably safe route, but has good size fall potential if you get pumped and come off high on the route. I think I popped off trying to clip bolt 5 or 6, and took an exciting 25 footer. I also wouldn't want to fall getting to bolt #3 following the crux of the route.
The grade seems a little high (I'd suggest 10b), but then again I do this route every time I come to Sand Rock...classic.
