Comments: I think the only real 5.7 part of this climb is the thin, shallow corner 20 feet below the first belay tree. The rest is 5.6, IMO, including the second pitch, hence it feeling easier than its neighbor, Hiatus which is significantly harder and more sustatined at 5.7+.

Comments: This has to be one of the greatest fourteener outings in Colorado. I did this ridge in 1996, and one of my main motivating factors was that I didn't want to downclimb the route on Little Bear! It was also the first of the "four great 14er traverses" that Roach describes that I tried, mainly because the route-finding seemed simpler than the rest: just stay on top.

I also had one of my closest calls ever on this route. After skirting the vertical wall about two-thirds of the way along by goin... more >>

Comments: I climbed this route in 1999, I have to say it was one of the most spectacular experiences of my life. After reading all of the above comments, I should point out what I actually did. We climbed the 11b dihedral on the first pitch, did the A4 traverse, but traversed off at Table Ledge, skipping the final two headwall pitches. Did I climb the Yellow Wall route? I dunno, but I sure had a good time.

Comments: I just climbed the The Thing today, after checking with a ranger at Chautaqua to make sure it is open, and IT IS OPEN. The only thing he said is that for the approach, go all the way to Sentinel Pass on the Royal Arch Trail, and then head west up the small ridge as if you were hiking to Green Mountain Pinnacle, and when you are even with the bottom of the rock, traverse over to it. Great route, by the way, and there are fixed slings on top for the rappel.
