Comments: Oooops! I mistakenly removed a leaver 'biner from the rap from the top of Clip tide (Jimmy Dean?, start of Jaws) pitch 1. Didn't realize it until I was on the ground. I left it clipped to a small bush at the base pretty much directly below the mixed route that has the first bolt about 30 feet.

Comments: Haha, Arjun, I would reverse your order to Dacite then this one, but maybe that's because I climbed them in that order! The rock is also a bit more solid on Dacite.

Comments: One can protect the opening moves with a blue alien (if starting below the bolt, not in the dihedral more to the right), though, the climbing is pretty straight forward to the first bolt. Fun route.

Comments: Found Nalgene koozie in Hackberry Creek. PM me and let me know, I'll be happy to get it back to it's owner.

Comments: If you mean leaving your vehicle just before the big hill on the way in, I'd say this will add about 10-15 minutes to get to the small pullout for Hackberry plus whatever time to get to your desired area from there. It's gorgeous out there now with all the recent rain.

Comments: Here: Toofast Topos

Available in .pdf or book format. Every route in the book has been climbed by the author multiple times. The topo in the picture is from a few years back; each topo has been updated for the book. They are simply amazing with meticulous detail.

Comments: Daniel, you could try contacting Marty Karabin , the author of the QC fold-outs (and out of print book). If I recall, his fold out has a pretty good overview of routes on the west side of the canyon (Hackberry, Glitter box, road area). I'm surprised REI doesn't have any. I used to have one somewhere but haven't seen it in years. Also, it is outdated as there have been many new routes and areas scattered throughout the area that will ... more >>

Comments: I really enjoyed this route. Traversed in from the top of SL pitch 1. Lesser quality rock than SL, but more varied climbing than the standard LD horizontals and pockets. Good stuff.

Comments: Located next formation north of Adios Larry. Great route. Second pitch consistent throughout, not sure where the crux was. Great fun! No webbing on the summit anchors at this writing. No need for chains, clean rope pull from the existing hangers.

Edit: crux is felt like pulling through 3rd bold on a return visit.

Comments: Finally got on this route recently. Fun moves and a great warm up for the area. Bird crap "pillars" are still present, but mostly easily avoidable. No snakes. Thanks for the route, Mike!

Comments: Hi Tim. Do you mean Rawhide road that runs on the east side of the canyon? I haven't taken it this season, but last Spring it was passenger car friendly, just long. I'd guess you'd be fine in a Subaru.

Comments: Annie - can you clarify your condition report a bit further? Were you able to drive down the dirt road off of Magma Mine Road for a little ways? There is a newer road off of the dirt road that breaks off left and has been closed to public use since it popped up a while ago, but to get to LD, Hackberry, and the Refuge, this road is not the way to go. I was out a couple weeks ago and there was increased activity, but I was able to make it all the way to the end of the road. 4WD required for the ... more >>

Comments: Brent - It's quite possible that some rock has broken off. There is definitely a a move or two between the first and second bolts that had my attention. I recall placing a small alien (blue, maybe) near the arete the first time I lead it.

Comments: Got on this not knowing what it was. Great rock with no fixed gear. Climbed it all the way to the top of the spire then down-climbed the chimney to the anchor for Ample Virginity. Guessed it was 5.7ish or so.

Comments: I enjoyed the first 2 pitches. At the top of the 2nd, I would recommend traversing right for the amazing 3rd pitch of The Wasteland (at top of the chimney). After that you can continue on the Wasteland to the summit or rejoin TFS for the top out. Be warned though, the 4th pitch corner of TFS is literally covered in bird sh*%.

Comments: The rock on pitch 1 below the vertical crack is less than desirable. Second pitch is good fun and protects well. The largest gear I used was a 3 Camalot. A thorough cleaning of pitch 1 may help.

Comments: For me, both are equally unacceptable. Climb the rock that is there, not the rock as you may wish it to be.

Edited to add:
Alex, I like your last thought very much "ultimately what we want to change or fix is not the rock but ourselves".
