Comments: From Mike Morin (JeffCo OS ranger): right now the entire area is closed, including the Sunshine Wall, Hall of Mirrors, and Poe Buttress, pending a determination of where the birds nest this year. Update: The Dome, Hall of Mirrors, Sunshine Wall, and Poe Buttress are now open to climbing (as of May 18, 2012). Climbers will need to utilize the western access trail to get to the aforementioned formations, and be sure not to stray into the area still under the closure. Block Towe... more >>

Comments: I spoke with the Access Fund folks today about land ownership and dogs. The net of it is that the overflow lot where the animal control folks were is not owned by the Access Fund. The lower lot is owned by the Access Fund. The trail and a good chunk of the land under the normal cliffs to somewhere near the Winter Warmer/Fence area is owned by the Access Fund. The area to the left (Winter Warmer area and left) and the top of the mesa are owned by Jefferson County Open Space. The Access Fund ... more >>

Comments: There were Golden Animal Control officers at the overflow parking trailhead today who were enforcing an apparently new leash law requiring dogs to be on leash even from the parking lot. Given they were handing out "free leashes" for now, it suggests this is a new regulation.

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : RMNP - Mixed/Ice : Wild Basin : Ouzel Falls area : Ouzel Falls (WI2 Easy Snow) By: Leo Paik When: Feb 28, 2012 | view comment >> |
Comments: Collecting a few comments on conditions already on MP.com regarding Ouzel Falls: Per Jim D. on 12/3/02: "We walked up to Ouzel Falls - the short cliffband 100 yards south of the falls that often ices up is bone dry." Per Joe Keyser on 1/2/02: Ouzel Falls (WI2/3?), which is about 2-3 miles past Hidden Falls is not worth the long walk, but, is a pretty enjoyable hike. It's in the sun all day, and is really short. Better to wait in line at Hidden, or go somewhere else.

Comments: You know, sometimes climbers are a playful bunch that like to mess with other folks and migrate a bit of rock from one area to another just to confound the future visitor...not that any of us have ever done that before.

Comments: While the climbing is much easier above, the rock quality is more suspect. Be careful and protect the upper part adequately, since some of the holds up there, particularly to the left of the crack, seemed questionable. Also, a helmet gets in the way for the bottom offwidth, but in retrospect it might be useful to get tossed up to you once you get to the ledge. Addendum: on the second run, we found you can go either right side in or left side in.

Comments: At 5'10", it's doable though a stick clip would be wiser. The crux didn't seem like it was getting the jug (easier with the right hand) but rather the next sloper up and right with iffy feet.
