Comments: Tell em' Pete. If I'm not mistaken, the first route and the naming of the rock was first done by Robert Karolick, Bob Somonette and yours truly in the early '70s. the route, "The Bloody Nit" ascents a prominent flake up the middle of the face and over the roof above.

Comments: Don't let the ratings fool scare you off of routes listed here. Many of them were put up in the B.C. (Before Cams) and may now be much better protected and hopefully safer. Have fun!

Comments: Sorry to say, Robert K. passed away (the big C) on March 14, 2009. His ashes will enjoy the view.

Location: CO : Colorado Springs : Pike's Peak

Comments: Don't expect the locals to give away beta on the "Peak", because we've seen too many pristine crags abused i.e., bolts added, trash, etc. from visiting climbers. If you DO go there, please respect the area and be ready for alpine weather conditions, long hikes/approaches, long runouts and costly {if any} rescue.

Location: CO : Caņon City : Shelf Road : The Gallery : Menses Prow : First Blood (5.8)

Comments: This route was put up in 1979 by Tom Eisenman, Pete Gallagher?, and myself, and protected all on stoppers and hexes, all the way to the top. Besides the big taboo on bolts back then, we were a lot braver(dummer) then. The Shelf Road area was really new and as far as I know, only a few climbs had been done there by Harvey Carter, Tom, Pete, and myself in the pre-sport, all"clean" climbing era.

Comments: The route that Gregg and I assumed was a first ascent was supposed to be the bottom half of what was later named "There Goes the Neighborhood", which after trashing my ankles flying off the lip, left it to friends to finish. Also, we started just to the left of the descent gully and followed a shallow groove/dihedral straight up to where I drilled the angle pin. Too bad so many top-ropers have erased/damaged that nice slab. Tooter-a device for snorting cocaine.

Comments: Try leading it backwards (i.e. from the funger to Tourist Gully). That makes it a lead on both ends.

Comments: On the first ascent, Gregg dislodged a pretty large flake almost trashing me AND his brand new Purple rope!!!

Comments: I see a lot of "first ascents" being bagged/claimed on Arch Rock these days. Remember that the climbing that went on there in the seventies was CLEAN, meaning, i.e.,natural or nuts, hexes, knotted slings often times long runouts etc. and often without chalk, the only evidence that another party had been there before was the lack of loose flakes or vegetation having been cleaned out.Yes, there were climbers back then.
