Comments: Thanks, Burt! Really enjoyable route with awesome moves and position. Paul and Sandy Wagener talked us into doing it. Spring and fall are apparently the best to do it 'cause in the summer it gets very moist. I'd give it 4 stars if it wasn't for the dirty start and brittle flakes. Feels like climbing a "real" pitch somewhere out West.

Comments: Definitely not many lead onsights of SOGC. I'm aware of only Pete Cleveland's OS and, since yesterday, of Chris's and his buddy's. (Paul Wagener or Dave Groth would be a good source)

I was there too to see them OS this. Very impressive leads indeed. Great to see this kind of activity at the Lake.

Comments: At 2 pounds 11 ounces this compact 4-season tent from Black Diamond (it's a lightweight twin to the I-Tent) is hard to beat in terms of weight. Be aware of its limitations though. The Featherlite poles flex quite a bit in the wind and the tent's Epic fabric is merely water-resistant so in the downpour the water drops seep directly through the walls.

Comments: Looks like a stellar route. Is it a one day event?

Comments: I'd speculate that it's quite possibly a bolt that pops when you fall on it :)

Comments: Hey Nick,
I think going to the jug left is the original line put up by Gill. I believe I did it the way Jason H had (from looking at his pics). Dave Groth showed me the way you are describing. Going on the arete is a harder variation which has a possible ground fall from the crux. I dropped a pack from it a month ago (Jason H was there too) and it stopped just above the ground but there was almost no rope stretch so any fall there wouldn't be pleasant.

Comments: Agree with Artem. We did it the day after you guys and the first pitch felt like WI2, second WI4-, third WI3. Very short rock traverse. Climbing Dike can really change depending on conditions. Four years ago it was much thinner and half of the second pitch was climbing on rock.

Comments: Sam -- I think this picture shows climbing Cerberus on Tricouni, not Cleveland route on Hairy Pin.

Comments: Nick -- the block does feel hollow and little iffy. I think it's ok for little falls, especially when a nut is placed at the bottom of the block. I would not risk a big fall on it -- I don't think the entire block would dislodge (not yet at least) but for the gear to pull, the block needs to move just a little. There are solid small cam placements higher up on the left but one needs to be careful with the rope (see the pic of the fall). I remember adding a #1 BD cam/long sling in the crack... more >>

Comments: After the loud "oh f@#k!" I knew he was going to fall but I didn't realize it was going to be THIS kind of a fall.

Comments: Thankfully... just in case though, should anybody stumble upon an unclaimed pair of balls underneath Son of a Great Chimney, please return them to the rightful owner :)

Kudos for trying, Isaac. I remember the route was wet and if you look closely at the pic, you can see it was snowing.

Comments: I don't think it's Isaac! It is clearly an imposter who decided to tarnish Isaac's impeccable climbing reputation by dressing up like him and diving off the cliff with a rope between his legs.

Comments: Nice job on that. We've always wanted to do it but, with how fickle the ridge conditions can be, it is difficult to plan this from Minnesota. Thanks for the info.
