Comments: so am i correct to assume this route gets morning sun and afternoon shade as it is on the east face of the fortress?

EDIT
the answer to this question appears to be yes, though i'm not sure exactly when it goes into the shade.

Comments: how likely is it that the base of this route is NOT under water in early september?

Comments: i'm pretty sure this is 5.8 at the hardest but Hendrixon usually lowballs it and he called it 5.9 so maybe i accidentally climbed around the crux? where is the hard part supposed to be? the steep crack in the middle?

Comments: the nut is solid but it won't keep you off the ground if you commit to the crux. also agree that it's harder than Haley's Comet a few routes to the left. very cool upper crack though.

Comments: while the climbing is good, this route has a lot of hollow sounding rock to be considered a classic.

it's a really tricky move but you're standing on a ledge while you figure it out. 11- at the hardest.

Comments: the rock is poor quality in many areas but the gear is solid if you place it in the good stuff. this is worth doing if you enjoy crack,s as it does actually require a fair amount of jamming.

Comments: helluva story john.

i also had a bad experience with loose rock on this one. i pulled off a 20-pound block maybe 10 feet up that shattered when it hit the ground and my belayer caught part of it with his leg. left a bruise i think. i can usually tell when there's a danger of something breaking, but this one came out of nowhere.

the crack in the middle is cool but the roof crack is uninspiring and appears to be waiting for just the right moment to break on someone, and the start is really dange... more >>

Comments: that glue would be me geir. back when mike and i were bolting this thing i tried to reinforce a key hold at the crux but it broke off anyway, leaving an ugly glue mark behind.

and i agree, it is unfortunate that the rock quality deteriorates so much as this route has amazing position and would be classic otherwise.

Comments: thanks jim. this route is actually pretty good, especially the overhanging layback/stemming corner up high. with the choss mostly gone it's yet another reason to bring a rack to milagrosa.

Comments: After leading this one today we toproped it and knocked at least 100 pounds of choss off the bottom, including the death block described in John H's Milagrosa Canyon Guide. The route is fairly safe now with most of the large and medium-sized blocks removed, though there is still plenty of small stuff waiting to come off.

The next time I'm out there i'll bring a hammer and finish cleaning this route. It actually turned out to be pre... more >>
