Comments: Thanks Steven, for the warning.

I wonder though if some people might mistake that "X" for an arrow, like a tic mark, and grab there.

Perhaps it will just require a crowbar to remove.

Comments: Thanks for the explanation Doug.

I think that the original finishing anchor was just a sling on the left end of the large block. It did not finish with the last part of Terminal P-.

Comments: That is a scary tale about the fixed rope. To think that someone could sabotage access like that makes me shudder. Or, even if it wasn't sabotage, then it still makes me worry about fixed lines. I'm glad though that you were OK.

I wonder about the best way to test a fixed line, particularly one partly out of view. Before starting on it, should one try to jump on it, or somehow generate a greater-than-bodyweight force? Or might that weaken a line, making it even more likely to break when you nee... more >>

Comments: Are you sure that the two shadows are from two peaks? They seem to have the same shape but a different tint.

It is almost like the two shadows are from the same peak, but the darker one is projected on dust in the air, the lighter one is further back, projected on the ground. It would be lighter due to scattered skylight. I've never seen anything like it, so am making a wild guess.

Comments: I predict that the route will become very popular, perhaps one of the most popular at the cliff.

Fantastic job David. Thanks.

Comments: Darryl and I had occasionally thought about cleaning this line, but it always looked too hard to clean. It is fantastic to hear that someone finally cleaned it.

Perhaps Index routes should have two ratings, a user rating for climbing difficulty, and a creator rating to give acknowledgement to the work of the FA party. This one would be u5.7, c5.14.

Any photos?

Comments: You have my permission to move the bolt.

We didn't always think very hard about the best bolt placement back then. Perhaps it was placed on lead, I don't remember anything about it, unfortunately.

Comments: I wish people would list full names for the FA parties. Not only does it give proper credit, it helps others to recognize mistakes.

In this case, it was probably Paul Boving as one of the FA guys. But who was the other?

But if you have to go, then perhaps the snake gaiters are the way.

Comments: I agree with John, this is a sandbag 10c.

Back when I had no trouble with any 10 at Index, I couldn't get this thing on TR. Perhaps I should go back and try it now, 35 years later. It would be like going for an onsight after all this passed time.

Comments: For some of these recommendations, is it better to breath in through the mouth or in through the nose? Out through the mouth or out through the nose?

In which cases is one better than the other, and in which cases does it not seem to matter?

Comments: Thanks James for the interesting history.

It is easy to see how confusion can arise, given that both spellings refer to different famous people of the same time, area, and occupation.

I'm looking forward to trying this route. Thanks for cleaning and equipping it. Maybe someday we'll get Darryl out there to help clean Lamplighter.

So, the #3 refers to a Black Diamond cam? Totem? Link? (Note - this info doesn't help me, as I have only ancient gear, but might help others.)

Comments: Looks like a fantastic new route, and so nice to see the moderate grade.

A few questions -

1) What is the story with Brett Thompson and Scott Fuller?

2) On pitch 1, where is the top of the chimney in relation to the point where Heaven's gate p1 goes right? (I can see the new bolt in the picture, but can't place the location exactly.)

3) What do you mean by a "#3"? Is this basically, a fist-size cam?

Nice find! Darryl had long talked about freeing the full Lamplighter, but it looks... more >>

Also, it looks like a piece recently broke off at the top.
