| I play a lot of disc golf these days. This is me, and Peter Shive (9 Time World Champion). I was 5 strokes ahead of Peter at this point in the round. He looks like he's going to get serious. | John McMullen : Misc Pictures | | Apr 23, 2009 |

Has it been free climbed all the way? If so, KUDO's to you!
It would be nice to see this with the other Cyn-Pin routes listed.

Location: CO : South Platte : Deckers By: John McMullen When: Apr 25, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: This entire area was slated to be at the bottom of a new Dam and Reservoir back when we were climbing there (thus the names). It was practically a fact ... and fortunately didn't happen.
Since climbers at the time didn't communicate ... miss information was the norm.

Location: CO : South Platte : Deckers : Java Dome : Traditionalists at Work (5.9) By: John McMullen When: Apr 25, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: Good post Bruce. I'll also mention that you could not buy bolts everywhere like you do now, and that our choice was very limited. I was never worried about the strength of the bolts ... and I tested quite a few.
Trying to buy bolts at a climbing shop practically required taking a verbal test with the shop owner. They didn't hand them out without question.

Location: CO : South Platte : Deckers : Atlantis Dome By: John McMullen When: Apr 25, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: Didn't someone chop all the bolts here a long, long time ago. Pretty sure these routes are toast ... and most distastefully ugly bolt studs riddle the walls now. A lot of HATE WORK went into removing them, that is easy to see.
I'm sure it's a lot better, more often climbed and loved now right?
We did have some good fun ... and that's what I remember most.

I believe my partner Clint (a kid, good free climber ... can't remember his last name, we both worked at Moosely Seconds, in Moose) and I did the second free ascent of this in the early 90's. At that time the route had quite a reputation in the valley, and only a few climbers had attempted a second ascent.
I called Charley Fowler, who I climbed with a lot in Boulder, and got the beta. He said he thought I would have fun on it ... so young "Clint" and I di... more >>

Location: CO : South Platte : Wigwam Creek/Lost Creek Wil... : The Sun : Halogen Angels (5.10a/b R) By: John McMullen When: Apr 25, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: I also want to add that to buy "climbing bolts" in those days ... you couldn't walk into a climbing shop and grab 1 bolt out of a box ... you had to ask for it (bolts were behind the counter gear). If you couldn't tell the shop owner or employee where you were going to place it ... you couldn't BUY IT. it wasn't like it is today.
1/4 inch bolts, or Star bolts were all that were available as "tested" climbing bolts. 1/2 inch drive-ins were made by RAWL a little later. We didn't have anything bet... more >>

Location: CO : South Platte : Wigwam Creek/Lost Creek Wil... : The Sun : Halogen Angels (5.10a/b R) By: John McMullen When: Apr 25, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: Looking at this line, and in fact the whole formation (I named it The Sun) for the first time and considering climbing it from the ground up with NO gear on it was awesome. I placed all the original bolts on lead and let me tell you ... it was fun, scary, and rewarding.
At the time, we thought we were using the best bolts for the job. The only other option would have been long star driven bolts and they would have taken forever to drill holes for with a hand drill. I never rap-bolted any routes... more >>

Location: IA : Palisades Kepler State Park By: John McMullen When: Apr 25, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: Having grown up in Eastern Missouri, I explored and climbed a lot in MO and Iowa as a kid. I climbed at Palisade Kepler when I was a teenager (by way of knowing about the Iowa Mountaineers climbing there). Although it's a small area, the Dolomite is fine!

Location: AZ : Le Petit Verdon (aka The Pi... : Nose Rock : Monster Mish (5.10d) By: John McMullen When: Apr 23, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: Stan did the FFA, I was sitting at the base of the wall and the bolts were still warm. I climbed and bolted the route ... Like many routes at The Pit ... getting the FA didn't matter to me in the least bit. It was all about having fun with my friends. If you don't know who did the FA or FFA, it was one of the crew probably. Didn't matter to us.

(5.12a PG13) By: John McMullen When: Apr 23, 2009 | view comment >> | Comments: There were so many people TRing this thing on the first day it was climbed. Verm was one of them. He returned and pulled bolts one day, they were back a week later. B Ward, J Gone, J Middendorf, Verm, More, Myself. Heck, Jim Bridwell may have been there that day ... it was a list.
