Comments: "Please keep in mind this is the original route for the entire Black Hills" A. Busse From the article posted above it appears that the 1936 party climbed at least one of the Cathedral Spires before this route. Joel

Comments: You can also do the two pitches above Katey's Route as a single pitch with creative use of slings to alleviate rope drag. The protection at the crux is good with one very committing/fun move. Gotta love 5.3 Conn climbs!

Comments: Great Scanned article in my Photo Albums titled "Herb Conn article from June 1953 issue of Appalachia" Good early overview of the Outlets all the way to the Spires. Almost an early mini-guide with a great little map. Thanks and happy climbing, Joel

Comments: I didn't think 8 bolts in 80 feet of climbing was run out at all (maybe somebody added some since 2006 when John posted this). Enjoyable/consistent 5.8 climbing the entire route.

Comments: If you use a shoulder length runner instead of a quickdraw it cuts out the rope drag as well.

Comments: Jimbo: Your dirtbag/cheapo climber argument is weak. The "Tribes establishments" that you speak of don't exist and therefore your argument is moot. P.F. Wein: The majority of Indians I've talked with(mostly Lakota), especially traditionalists, do have a problem with climbing in June as well as the rest of the year. May,June, and July are months with lots of ceremonies that are centered around Mato Paha(Bear Butte) and Mato Tipila(DT). These include Sweats, Vision quests and especially at DT ... more >>

Comments: Mato Tipila is the Lakota name for the tower a translates as Bear Lodge. It is a shared sacred site with many other Tribes and has other names as well.
