Comments: This tall problem was climbed ground up, so there are still some loose holds that will break. There is a loose block at the lip of the hole, and take extra caution up high.

Comments: There are a couple different variations you can do on this one. Topping out way right makes the topout much more difficult. Or, make one or two moves on the rail, then go straight up to a white incut rail, then to a small crimp on the vertical headwall, then up to the ledge. A little easier, but very fun. The easiest walk off is by climbing ABOVE the tree, walking to the right over the tree, then down.

Comments: This is a nice little bouldering area, whether you are looking for some fun, easy problems or some mutant-hard projects. The setting is hard to beat, as well. I know people have been climbing here for a while, but with a paucity of information regarding climbs in this area, we have been adding problems with names we have given them. If you have climbed these problems before and had a name for them, let me know and we'll revert to the original name.

Comments: The hike is well worth it if you are prepared to hike, and prepared for a little choss. There are some real good boulders here, but there is still a fair amount of loose rock. Many problems are cleaning up nicely, but others still need more traffic. And there are still PLENTY of new lines if you are willing to put in the effort of cleaning them up a bit. There are some new topos, and hopefully more soon, at www.boulderingtucson.com.

Comments: This problem has been re-sent, and is an absolute classic. Bomber rock (now that it has cleaned up a bit) and fantastic movement through 20 feet of roof. This problem would be a classic in Hueco, and is certainly one of the best in Tucson.

Comments: This is the obvious and striking overhanging prow on the far right side of the roof. Great job on a pretty bold ascent.

Comments: Come on out, mobley! There will be plenty of FAs still up for grabs. Climbing here takes a lot of initial cleaning, but once it is cleaned a little and climbed a few times, the lines are real good. Small feet will continue to break for a while, but most of the handholds on the established climbs should be solid. Lines here should be kept natural - no chipping or drilling, and no gluing. The rock here is highly featured, and there should always be another way to climb through a section.

Comments: If anyone checks this place out any time soon, I'd love to hear your thoughts about the area and what you guys climbed. This place is cleaning up pretty well and the problems that are going up so far are very high quality.

Comments: A key cobble used in the crux section of this climb came off today (the big jug Chris is heel hooking in the photos). The problem is harder now, but probably even a little better. An open project once again.

Comments: The hike is long, but not as bad as it looks. It is also real easy to chase shade here, so when it is warm (but not too hot) like now, the hike is a bit worse, but the climbing is nice.

Comments: Some really good problems on this boulder. Be prepared for a tricky descent. We downclimbed the backside, which is essentially a 30 foot 5.8 slab with a few really balancy spots. Have your spotter down there with a pad or two for protection.

Comments: I can confirm that the boulders are now on public land, and bouldering is allowed. A couple months ago while bouldering at the upper boulders at night, three local Sheriff's deputies trudged up the hill to investigate calls about "weird lights radiating from the hillside". After making sure we weren't armed lunatics or escaped felons, they told us we were fine climbing there because it was indeed public land.

Comments: I also think a big problem here is that Tucson bouldering doesn't seem to have a well documented history, and the bouldering 'scene' seems to come in waves, occasionally fizzling out a bit, sometimes resurging. This can make it hard to know what has been done before and what hasn't, what things are named, etc. The McMillen guide is good but not comprehensive, and has anyone younger than 40 ever seen a copy of "Bouldering Beyond Campbell"? Maybe my perspective is a little off, though, being a rel... more >>
