Comments: There is a beehive somewhere near the top of the 5.8 crack on the north face of the 3rd spire. I think the climb is called Penetration. The bees would prefer you avoid that area. Or at least that's how we interpreted the angry buzzing and attacks to the head without stings, thankfully.

Comments: Both of these routes were really fun. Good job you guys. We rapped (~170')from the top of pitch 2 of "Scoopin'," pulled the ropes and climbed "Time'll." Pitches 3 and 4 are easily combined. Excellent summit view!

Comments: As long as we don't walk down the road from the original parking area shown on the approach map on the main page here, but use the alternate parking area for the approach, all should be well,( see update comments above in "more info" section reference the note in the sign-in box.) I'm hoping people are not walking down that road that is signed "no trespassing". Camping at the original parking area is legal but would certainly cause the rancher to raise an eyebrow. There is good camping near the ... more >>

Comments: Steve, In 26 years I have never had a problem with encountering illegals in the area. We have helped with trash cleanups on the ranch along some well-used routes out in the foothills strewn with packs, water bottles, and clothes. I have camped at the parking area and in various points in the canyon without ever seeing any illegals. Several friends of mine have done the same without issues. I am not worried about my safety relating to illegals out there but try to remain vigilant. I also... more >>

Comments: Even though I've never had troubles rapping off the "back," I would also highly suggest the low-angle Waterfall Raps on the East side for most parties. If you hike up to the base of those raps and leave your pack, there are several easy ways to access the main Trunk Route (see pic above.)

Comments: As an alternative approach when riding the tram, you can shave off some elevation by taking the tram to the last stop. Scramble straight up the main gully to the right of the trailhead to intersect the phoneline trail. Hike the trail down canyon, (you actually keep gaining a small amount of elevation,) until you can access the final slope leading up and right to the base of the Kor Wall.

Comments: Hey David-- Tried to PM you. It sounds like you may have been right on the route. I added a better picture of the route-- you can't really see much of pitch 2. I spent many hours on those fire-scarred, rain-washed slopes. I'm guessing you didn't catch the very start right from the switchback--I missed it several times myself in the beginning. I didn't want to build a huge cairn there, but if you spend a little time making sure you catch the start, which drops down a bit from that switchb... more >>

Comments: Karl Rickson was a good friend who died in Jan.'02. After the near-death of his partner on Shelter From the Storm, Karl told me how the raps really needed to be improved and the top pitches were a mess because they had to avoid so many loose blocks. KR went to the hospital on a Xmas night, was diagnosed with cancer, and died in battle one month later. The raps are better and the upper section is a little cleaner now.

Comments: Steve: It's perfect the way it is. It's easy enough just hiking the canyon to the wall. If they don't find it... well it's all about the journey anyway, right? I love taking all my climbing gear out for a nice hike every now and then. See ya at the next Fest.

Comments: There is a 5 pitch 5.9 A.3 (Colin Goes to Colorado)(almost all aid) that goes up the middle of the streak area. There is also a 6 pitch 5.10d (Diagonemesis) that starts at the left edge of the main brown streaks and follows the left-diagonalling weakness system.

Comments: They're all excellent routes, in my opinion. I discovered a long while ago that I use a different set of standards than most people, so I stopped rating climbs. (Seems people like solid rock and good pro!) In posting these I couldn't continue unless I rated them so I went with "good." I'll let people make up their own minds. Definitely worth the hike out there--if you're into that kind of thing.

Comments: Chuck Lipinski, as I recall. I'd like to see some info on the traverses on Granite and the Overlook. Not many around, that I know of -- just Rap Rock, Rockefellow, and one on Table Dome in Mendoza. Maybe a good topic for the Forum to see how many are in AZ ??

Comments: "Action packed"...yes... I believe we used some additional expletives during and after safely traversing about 20 years ago. Pretty challenging route finding even with decent knowledge of the routes it traverses. Steiger's description, which actually starts you on George's Buttress, works fine. Glad to see you post it here, Paul. Don't know of many people who have done it and I'd hate to see it slip into obscurity-- really fun adventure!

Comments: Correct name is "Tale of the Scorpion," being a play on words. You can see the black scorpion on the wall to the right of the actual line. An epic story of being stung hard. FA Dave Webster, Rick Nelson, Jeff Mayhew April 1990. Originally 4 approach pitches and 10 on the main wall.
