Comments: We climbed Lamb Slide on 7/24. The route is in fine condition - at 7 Am we found 1-2 inches of soft snow over firm snow - great cramponing. A bit softer by 11 AM when we left. No ice or dirty ice yet.

Comments: On 10/8 we climbed the western gully of the Ptarmagin Fingers on the north side of Flattop Mtn. Trail was snow-free to 11,000'. On the route there was 1-3 feet of windloaded snow, most blown in during this past week (moderate avi danger?). It was a fun snow climb. We dug down once to put in an ice screw, otherwise we encountered no ice. Did not see any water ice forming yet on Notchtop, Odess or Guides wall. but, with moderate snow load around, some melting and freezing should get it going.

Comments: We climbed the Ptarmagin Fingers today; we did the most eastern one. Snow was in FINE shape - 1 to 3 inches of wet, soft snow over very dense snow. Pickets were useful - no water ice seen anywhere. The snow went continuously up right from the lake - best snow conditions in years. Other gullies in the basin look great too. From far away, the Trough on Longs, and Thatchtop Powell snow fields looked chuck full of snow.

Comments: Climbed Black Lake Slabs on Sunday March 28th. Conditions good, but not great. Slabs a little less wide and less thick than normal. First few inches of ice were often manky. There was 4 inches of new snow. West Gully looks good down low, but was snow covered up high. Approaching/retreating probably requires snowshoes or skis as there is lots of post-hole potential, especially during warm afternoons.

Comments: Climbed Lincoln Falls on 12/22/03 - in pretty good shape, but not great. The Bowling alley on the left (also called Lincoln falls major & minor) is in pretty wide, and fairly thick, though not very blue. Low angle slab looks real good. Sickle on a Stick is not in at all - there were some big pieces that had recently fallen off. We climbed the big curtain in the middle of the upper cliff - nice vertical ice, though kind of kicked out due to heavy traffic.Looked at Silverplume as we zoomed by ... more >>

Comments: We scrambled up the Ptarmagin Glacier this weekend. All the alpine ice routes in the basin there look great. Spotty covering of dense snow over crampon friendly ice. The Hourglass gully (most westerly) is a bit more melted out than is typical at the rocky constriction of the Hourglass, but otherwise these icefields and the Ptarmagin are in the best shape they have been in years. Go get 'em before they are covered with new snow!

Comments: We went up to climb Spearhead - the rock was cold, but the climb was great. For the approach we used snowshoes for the last 2 miles and it seemed to help, though others got through okay without them. Check out the swath of avalanche busted trees below Black Lake! If you ever want to do a snow route in the area (ex: the Trough), now may be the time as conditions look great - dense snow in all the gullies. Beware the mid-day slush though as we heard a big wet slide come off the east side of Mc... more >>

Comments: We arrived in Ouray on 3/13/03 to find the temperature = 60F! Climbed 3/14 & 3/15 in the Gorge. They had not made any new ice for a while, thus the routes were a bit worn, but still good. The tools sticks were soft and easy, though screws seemed to melt out in 10 minutes - we toproped! The dripping water was only annoying on 3/14, but worse on 3/15 when it got warmer. We quit mid-day on Saturday due to melting ice. The last route we wanted to climb in the lower gorge seemed unstable so we bailed... more >>

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : RMNP - Mixed/Ice : Wild Basin : Hidden Falls : Hidden Falls (main) (WI4)
By: Jim D. When: Dec 3, 2002

Comments: We climbed it on Sunday 12/1/02. Main falls is in, but still not very fat. The lower third is not as broad as usual. The middle third is comprised of a lot of icicles, and was dripping on Sunday. The WI4 upper piller is a bit smaller than usual, and is only attached to the top lip with about one square foot of contact area.We were too nervous to lead it, but when we toproped it, it felt and sounded pretty good. A brave party after us led it fine. Small climb to left is in (short WI2?)@SEMIC... more >>

Comments: We climbed Black Lake Slabs on 3/23 - they are in fat & blue. The snowtrail to Black Lake was packed fine - no snowshoes needed on the way up, but the afternoon warmth required snowshoes for the walk down, otherwise a fair bit of postholing in soft snow. West Gully looks good; All Mixed Up looks weathered.

By: Jim D. When: Dec 13, 2001

Comments: Silverplume - The ice is in and good, with 3-4 short routes to choose from (WI3 or so). Could use some more moisture and cold though, as in once section, the ice was thin enough to see/hear water flowing briskly underneath, even though it was 16F and cloudy.
