Me and my boy at the base of Half Dome after chickening out the first time in 2006. Made it half way up the cables in 2010 before turning around. 2011 we WILL make it to the top!

Stolen 'deer' in Idyllwild.

Someone stole a deer from in front of La Casita restaurant in Idyllwild a few weeks ago. This particular deer has climbers painted on it and is part of a town-wide display of deer painted by local artists. If you see "Rocky" at a friend's house.... Turn the dirtbag in.

Comments: 5 bolts my ass! I only counted 3. Truly one of the scariest runouts I've encountered. The worst part is that I couldn't SEE the second bolt from the first because it is around a corner. It's there but...

Comments: Scary but not hard. Lots of edges for fingers--fingernails and feet. The runouts are the part that made it hard. Still, a GREAT route and a proud lead for anyone. LOTS of rope drag on the first pitch--I had long slings and forgot to use them at the traverse. The second pitch traverse doesn't produce rope drag because your first clip is well off the belay and AFTER the 10a crux traverse.

Comments: Finally sacked up and led this in December--should have waited for the Winter Solstice but....

I agree with the previous poster--bolts DO NOT equal sport. However, I found the route perfectly protected.

It is possible to get off route near the 4th bolt by venturing too far towards Arcy Farcy. The traverse back in is truly THIN. Not recommended.

Comments: Led this today. Seems like harder than 11a and definitely harder than Valhalla's start and harder/thinner than the upper section. Note: if doing the full 160 pitch the rope drag and weight is SPOOKY getting the last few bolts. I really was glad it was only mid 10s because I thought it would pull me off. Still, great fun and a proud lead--even if I fell a few times (OK, fell a lot).

Comments: On pitches 2 and 3 I found pin scars that accept a #2 Offset Mastercam. Higher up on pitch 3--if you stay out of the gulley and do the right crack--some smaller gear works well--0.4s, 0.5s and 0.75s mostly. There are few places for larger stuff but the climbing is really positive so running it out isn't that scary.

Oh, and saw a big ass black rattler in the bushes at the base today. Yikes!!!

Comments: PG13? Hardly. I watched a guy place a .75 Camelot just under the roof and a 3 Camelot just before that. Once you have those two pieces, the roof is just a matter of pulling through it. The proudest lead I've done.

A 70 meter rope gets you to the tree for a shaded belay.

Also, there is a stuck Metolius Supercam in the crack to the right near the bottom crux. The sling is in good shape and the thing is NEVER coming out, so I clipped it to prevent an upward zipper if I fell higher up and... more >>
