Location: AZ : Central Arizona : Four Peaks Wilderness : Four Peaks : Four Peaks Motherlode (Easy 5th R) By: Ian F. When: Apr 28, 2010 | view comment >> | Comments: Pernell, Yeah, I guess it depends on your comfort level, and the route you take. If you are fast Grade II. For most though, it is a full day. Roman - I agree that the majority of the route is Class 4 and lower, but because of the ability to take a multitude of routes, easy class 5, is easy to come by, and people should be aware. And like you said the crux is getting from 2-3, or 3-2. We made the mistake to drop off the East Side of 3, and found some nerve racking down climbing. Appar... more >>

Location: AZ : Central Arizona : Phoenix Areas : McDowell Mountains : Morrell's Wall : Beat Feet (5.7) By: Ian F. When: Apr 3, 2010 | view comment >> | Comments: I went out today to collect some gear left last weekend. My wife and I did the 5.6 to the east. I lowered to the edge of the Rap for Beat Feat and peered down. I could see several nests, and closer to the bottom was another nest with three hatchlings, chirping. We rapped down Space Cadet, rather than rap back east. If it wasn't for the gear I needed to collect we would not have done this. So, I would think this section of Morrels is off limits the rest of the season.

Location: AZ : Central Arizona : Phoenix Areas : Superstition Mountains By: Ian F. When: Mar 16, 2010 | view comment >> | Comments: I was out there a month ago. All I can say is that I saw several bolted routes @ fish creek, below the bridge to the south. I was not there to climb, so I have no idea what the range of difficulty may be. I would only think about it, if I was going out there to hike first, and if I had my gear maybe give something a go. Long drive for a few climbs. Unless of course you are looking for scary choss, death climbs, there are FA's awaiting. A very cool remote place nonetheless. Just not a... more >>

Location: AZ : Central Arizona : Phoenix Areas : McDowell Mountains : Knob Hill Area : Piggys Conch Shell (5.8) By: Ian F. When: Feb 11, 2010 | view comment >> | Comments: The bolts run in the trough. Route starts to the right (not left), down in the shaded corner (trough). Several small moves through the trough, and 5. easy from there. Fun route.

Can't believe I trusted those bolts. Later went on to do Forrest roof and sheared a bolt at the lip under body weight. One second I was about to clip anchors, the next swinging wildly 5' above the boulders. Never again will I trust any 1/4 hanger.

Location: AZ : Central Arizona : Phoenix Areas : Superstition Mountains : Weavers Needle By: Ian F. When: Mar 19, 2008 | view comment >> | Comments: Well worth it to camp on top. Best camping site I have been at yet. Views are amazing. We only took what we needed and left the other pack at the base. Not so much fun leading the pitch with a large pack though, but definitely adds to the excitement. If possible the second should carry the pack. In my case that was not an option.
