Comments: Cheyenne Canyon is currently closed (12/2/2013) because of this past summer's flooding. Tried to go check it out last week, but they had a guard at the main gate. Sucks. It was a fun place to get some mid-week laps in on the falls.

Comments: Raspberries are still going and the river is warm! I did the Nazca/Knossos link up (check it out in the updated Colorado Guidebook-Thanks, Stewart, for putting that together!).

Awesome granite, felt like a gecko sticking to the rock. Unfortunately got a late day start and didn't get up the Velcro Wall that would have made it even better.

Comments: As of 2010 February 19 this was in fat! At least the first pitch was. picked a bad weekend to go. Avi danger started at considerable and went to high. High clouds in the early morning gave way to heavy snow and wind. We were getting nailed with spindrift from all angles, the worst coming down the climb itself. After getting knocked off by increasingly heavier spindrift we backed off. I bailed about 20 ft from the top of pitch one. Didn't need to get hit again! It was fun but starting to get a li... more >>

Comments: As of 2010 February 19, SWTH is in FAT!!! Unfortunately we picked a bad weekend to head down there. Avi danger went from considerable to high. We started climbing Whorehouse, but got hammered by very heavy spindrift that knocked me off.

Comments: Love the crux on this!!!!!!!!

I think the Gunks Select Guidebook has it at a 5.7. It sucks for short people. My bro being shorter than I (I am only 5'9") always had trouble reaching up for a good hold.

Comments: Has anyone ever seen the frog's head? I have done it twice in the past and never saw it. I think there is reference to it in the Gunks Select guidebook put out by Dick Williams.

Comments: Mark... No offense taken. I think discussions such as this bring us all to greater understandings. We should realize that no matter how well prepared a rescue team is or even one of us for that matter, things can happen (Murphy's law). So, the rescuers did indeed put their lives on the line. I never said a rescue team wouldn't go anywhere to rescue someone. I think we have all witnessed (unfortunately) how far these teams will go to rescue people often putting themselves @ great peril.

Comments: I had to pick up the Climbing gear review to see what the fuss was about. Pretty lame compared to years past when the mag was fat with all kinds of gear and real reviews.

Comments: According to local news (reliable or not) he was just "scrambling" up rock. I have seen many people (non-climbers I am guessing) scrambling or as the media call it "climbing" in places where they shouldn't be (no gear). There are quite a few "ramps" where one can go; One such place, 'TOURIST trap gully." A fairly easy "scramble" for some of us to get to climbs on that face, but the search and rescue teams have placed huge eyebolts in order to facilitate easier extrication of people who... more >>

Comments: Feel bad for this guy, his family, and friends, but when they label people like this "climbers" as they did on the local news here it makes the rest of us look bad and then you have people thinking "hey maybe we should ban climbing altogether in the park?"
I don't climb there anymore, but when I did I saw A LOT of people scrambling up the rocks where they had no business being and the staff they had roving around their said nothing. Maybe if they enforced the fines, it might make people take a ... more >>

Comments: That's good to hear. I do miss lunch on the GT ledge. Can't believe they rap anchors and bolts there. Did they put anchors on the rap from Madame G's? If I remember that was a free hanging rap. That was a blast!! (Although it doesn't surprise me. I used to teach climbing in a gym and would be scared to see people I taught how to tie in and belay a week or so later there w/ shiny new gear!!!)
I miss the Gunks grease after a day of climbing there. One of these days I'll make it back there and back... more >>
