Comments: The starting moves are very height dependent. It can be more straight forward for tall people but there are options for us shorter types as well. The movement on this route is great! It feel very fluid and there are a variety of holds so each person can figure out their own best way to climb this route. It is sustained climbing with only a few marginal rests. It builds until you are tired and you find the true crux right near the end of the climb.

Comments: I really enjoyed this route. The climbing was varied and sustained, especially at the top. I was able to did a little bit of everything (lie back, hand jams, and finger locks) etc, just in one pitch. There is a roomy belay ledge to bring up your second. Be careful rapping down if using a 60 m rope!

Comments: The same guy who is organizing this trip also previously arranged a 3 year around the world climbing trip. I met them several years ago when this trip was going through Yosemite. I was traveling solo, so I became part of their collective for a few weeks. It was a lot of fun. Later that summer the trip came through Colorado. I was able to host them and show them around to all of the great climbing here. When they entered the US, they had to give up on the Big Red Truck. No one would give t... more >>

Comments: The crux is getting off the ground. A bit tricky, but safe if your belayer spots you. You can clip the first bolt of Children of a Lesser Grade (use a long runner) to cut down on the run out to the first bolt.

Location: UT : Moab Area : Potash Road : Long Canyon : Maverick Buttress : Texas Two Step (5.10) By: Frances Fierst When: Nov 9, 2004 | view comment >> |
Comments: For gear, I placed a .75 camalot off the ground, 2 #1s, 2 #2s, 2 #3s, 2 #3.5s , and the top can take a #4 if you want to drag it along. Calling this the easiest lead on Maverick may hold true if you have big hands. But since I have small hands, the whole second half of this climb was fists and stacks. Not real easy for me, but one hell of a work out.

Comments: Be warned, the first and second pitch require totally different gear. The first pitch takes nuts and small cams (think yellow alien). The first half of the second pitch takes red #1 camalots, and the upper section of pitch two is yellow camalot size.

Comments: I agree with Roger on this one. The gully is a pain, but it is a nice route. I found the crux to be getting to the third bolt. Maybe I missed something (or I'm short), but I ended up clipping off a crimp. This is a route where it is better to bring your second up. The view is great! It was much nicer to belay from the large ledge, rather than lowering and belaying in the gully

Comments: Although I will agree that this is not one of the overall top Eldo climbs, I will say that it is a GREAT climb for the grade. Rossiter gives stars to only 16 climbs in the 5.7 range. If you throw out the "S" rated climbs like the Bulge, you are down to only 12 climbs. Many of his other starred routes have received less than favorable reviews here also. So this leaves the 5.7 leader with very few quality choices. I would recommend the Bastille Crack, Rewritten, Verschneidung, and Mescaline o... more >>

Comments: First of all, this climb is an offwidth. If you don't like offwidth, you won't like this climb. However, I thought it was a lot of fun. I was able to climb a lot of it on the outside, and I spent very little time inside the crack. Based on the description, I brought a 4.5 camalot. Dave mentions that he was not able to place his #4 until the crack narrows and slants up and to the right. Having a 4.5 didn't change this. I put my cam in the same spot Dave mentions. I don't think having... more >>

Comments: This is a great climb that finishes on the summit. More amazing views!!! However, the slabby finish makes for a strenuous rope pull. You can bring people up this climb, but there is no chance that you will top rope this one.
