Comments: This can be a frustrating problem as the hardest moves are the starting ones. Especially when the well chalked up rail looks so promising from first glance.

Comments: If you are heading down the bottom of the gorge to do one of the longer routes do not forget to pack a head torch! The first time we did a route there we forgot to bring a head torch. Rather than go all the way back to the village we decided to wait for a tourist to come on by which one did after 20 or so minutes. We then we able to follow along through the tunnels, which work great until they decided to turn back after the first one, leaving us stranded. Our only option was to stumble al... more >>

Comments: This problem climbs really nicely, with a lot of movement for a problem not really that tall.

Comments: It is common to do this traverse right to left to finish of a rather pumpy loop when it is combined with Crucifix Traverse High.

Comments: The eastern approach road (as described here) is now blocked to traffic. In order to reach the area, take the first left turn, and follow this for about half a mile then follow the road as it swings right. Continue along this road until you raches the large log and the parking area.

Location: CA : Sierra Eastside : Bishop Area : Owens River Gorge : Upper Gorge : ... : 2 Feet to Hell (5.11a) By: Euan Cameron When: Nov 27, 2011 | view comment >> |
Comments: Kinda an odd one. 3 tightly spaced bolts low down at the crux, then some very spaced bolts albeit over easy ground (mess up climbing the 4th bolt and you will deck from 50 feet). Interesting moves up to the big ledge keep it almost enjoyable. The slab above is contrived, and to be honest it would benefit from a set of anchors below the large ledge.

Comments: i would agree. This seemed the hardest of the 11b's on this wall. The crux comes late just when the pump is coming.

Comments: This is area is known as "The Beach" to the locals. While no where near any beach (at least I couldn't see one) it is located in a beautiful location. When we visited in 2011 a number of the climbs could do with some bolt maintenance, but in general things are well bolted and the easy access makes this a good spot for a quick visit. Another benefit in the summer months is the lack of mosquitos, something that cannot be said for the other local climbing venues. There is really good local inf... more >>

Comments: Once you have climbed a problem you do have something to do with it. If there is no recorded name I don't see the problem with giving it one. That's hardly unethical, nor does it undermine this site. The routes database is king, however the community represented by all who log in to this site is also important. Putting forth a name allows for debate, which is healthy, and if the original name comes forth from that debate great the database will be better for it.

Comments: I fail to see how you can assume that! The FA entry is empty, Chris has stated the fact that the problem is listed in the current guide with its number and the fact it has no name. I see no harm in giving problems names if they don't have one listed in the latest guide. If you know the name it was given 15 years ago, give it up and I am sure Chris will amend the entry.

Comments: There is a fair amount trail construction as you approach the crag, and the folks doing this are making a really good job of it. We climbed more or less straight up to the chimney pitch and managed to summit with 4 long 60m pitches. A great climb every time.
