Comments: Subterfuge is an 30* overhanging blunt arete. 35-40 feet long, you lower off about 15 feet out from the start. Every move is at least .10+, with the very last move (reaching for the horn next to the anchors) being the stoutest.

Comments: Nice route, the crux pockets are fun. The cactus is positioned right where you make a blind reach, it got me. The 2 nostril pockets for your feet while you thread the anchor are an added bonus.

Comments: I can't believe it took 20 years to connect that pun, good job Tom! And yes, once again I was swinging all over it and nearly pulled Brian off his belay deck, fortunately he weighs more than Richard did.

Comments: Wow, that was weird, Chris. We posted within a minute of each other. Wonder if anyone else will ever read this.

Comments: Just revisited this route today (with Mr. Cavallaro) after about 18 years. Forgot how fun it was. There's like 4 or 5 .11A moves in a row, culminating with one solid .11 move to a cobble; then 3-4 .10 moves to the anchors.

Those anchors need to be reset; we were under the influence of some goofy idea from Climbing Mag at the time regarding offsetting the anchors to better equalize the forces.

If you visit this wall to work on Rim Job or Bones, don't miss this. Doesn't lo... more >>

Comments: Andy, it's true that the bastards are everywhere. However, the zones I flagged are some of the places where you simply should not even go during snake season. If someone told me "hey, I want to see some rattlesnakes", this is where I'd take them.

Comments: I can remember specifically back in the '70s, they were afraid the rock was on the verge of breaking in half and rolling down the hill. That's when and why climbing there was outlawed. The overhanging SW face under the flag is what they were afraid of.

Comments: I don't like the 8 days off. Maybe they pay the D-backs or Phillies to hang out here for a week and keep getting their asses kicked, just for the practice. Ian Wolfe: you might be right about the Rox beating the Sox not happening since the Indians are going to do it instead.

Comments: This a good time to listen to Jim Rome (10 to 1 on AM950), he's giving the Rox tons of love. He's equating them with the old Yankees that won 4 or 5 Series in a row.

Comments: Anybody remember the picture of Bachar hanging on a toprope on "To Bolt or Not to Be?" Todd Skinner was in the foreground, looking over his shoulder at the camera with a "heeheehee" grin. Classic. The guy brought alot of flavor to a sport that far too often has no real perspective.

Tod Anderson has an amazing skill for locating new areas that were only rumors to the rest of us. Tod led us up to Wild Iris back when all anyone knew about it were pictures of Skinner and Piana labeled at a secret ... more >>

Comments: Regarding the first bolt being stripped, my take is that someone sketched out on that clip, possibly even dropping off. This person then decided for all of us that [we're] better off either climbing to #2 or stick clipping. Had Rawl bolts been used instead of Red-Heads - with the protruding threaded stub - the clip could easily be restored. Tom and I revisited this route about a year ago and didn't think the missing clip was all that big of a deal.

Comments: It's really only about a 42" gap, most adults can step over. The hop over at The Dungeon is worse but still doable.

Comments: Hey Tom: Just finished moving and I was offline for 2 months. Do you still have my number? (it's the same.) Now that you're down there, maybe we can work on the project. With October coming up, we can also organize the "Castlewood Fall Rattlesnake Festival". TTYL

Comments: In all the years we hung out there, I've seen all sorts of critters but never any sort of eagles. Turkey vultures are abundant. Regarding the grade, C-wood has its own techniques; the ability to sort of "guess" where a useable feature may be the most useful. As I remember, this route has a hidden sidepull for the left hand just below the anchors.
