Comments: If this is the route immediately to the right of Tava (and I believe that it is), then it is no longer a 5.9. We lead both Icarus and Tava, Tava may have been more sustained at the grade (5.10a), but Icarus has moves on the upper middle of the climb which are harder than the moves on Tava.

As we left the park, there was a couple on Icarus who were having extreme trouble on the upper middle part of the climb, they thought it was a 5.9 and not the 10a/b that it is.

Don't get me wrong, Icarus is... more >>

Comments: Snake alert, On Saturday a climber on Solar Flare got bit by a snake when he put his hand in the crack at the start of the climb about 5 or 6 feet from the base (I was climbing two routes to the right on Tava).

We could not identify the snake as it retreated back into the crack. The climber seems to have been ok so either it was a dry bite or it was not a rattlesnake. The crack is very deep making it very difficult to see the little bugger.

Comments: Looking for information on how much snow is in the canyon? Are the south facing routes climbable? Anyone been up there last weekend (4/12 - 4/13).

Comments: We used a 60m rope and had no problems at all. I'd tie a knot in the end just to be sure the belayer doesn't let it through the belay device. I also had no problem getting a #2 Cam in. FYI this route is a little harder than the rest of the 5.7s in the RROS. It's not hard but compared to some of the other 5.7s on the Whale, it is harder, I'd give it a RROS 5.8-.

Comments: We were there over the Easter Weekend (Mar 21st) and FR 44 was in fair shape (a few large mud sections, no problem for a 4x4 but a car might not make it) The road to the trad area was all but impassable for anything but off road rigged vehicles i.e. lift kits, tires etc. Until it dries out best to park below and hike up.

Comments: Supplemental directions: To get to the trad area travel north on FR 44. At the intersection for road 248 stay to the right (the sign for 248 was in the middle of the fork and unclear which road was 248 and which was FR 44). Continue on FR44, you will pass spur road 44A on the left. Go about .6 miles further and you will come to an unmarked road on the left. This is the road to the trad area. Take this left and drive about a mile until you get to the gate mentioned in the guide book and park on t... more >>

Comments: Pockets a' Plenty is a great climb, but watch out for Poison Ivy at the belay station.

Comments: Great climbs on the Whale's Tail, but watch out for poison ivy at the belay station. Especially at Pockets a' Plenty belay station.

Comments: If rapping off the 2nd pitch with the new chains, when pulling the ropes, we found that if you walk north to the top rope area the ropes pull much easier (we couldn't pulled them closer to where you end up on the rap), and then if you want you can rap to the ground from the top rope anchors.

The new chains are great, but since the chains are long enough to reach over the edge and there really is no footing on the face be prepared, getting over the edge is a bit sporty.

Comments: This is a great climb; it might be slightly underrated. It is run out and it traverses, so a fall in the wrong spot would result in one heck of a pendulum. We did it with out extra gear, but nuts would ease the psychological factor. Although not a difficult climb, the view from the top is awesome, so it is well worth the effort. It could use a belay anchor, but bring a long strap and anchor off the first bolt. Due to the traversing nature of the climb, itís probably best to belay yo... more >>
