Comments: As of Sunday 5/27 there are giant gobs of FECES smeared on every handhold at Doug's Roof (and Doug's Nose).

It appears to be both cat and dog poop based on hair and what looks like kitty litter. I took photos and have strong suspicion that it was the woman with the brown house next to the vet clinic. There have been reports of her confronting climbers and threatening to smear "dirt" all over the walls of Down Under. Looks like she took it a step too far here, since this is not her prope... more >>

Comments: Even though chains for some of the routes may be a nice convenient addition, I think it will be met with great controversy from the people that have been climbing there for years. Top-rope anchors with either big trees or good gear can be had for every climb.

Sport routes at College Rock, in my opinion, are out of the question. It is only 30 feet tall, and there is no room for new additions without retro-bolting an established climb. Don't even think about bolting My Mind is a Blank.

Sorry ... more >>

Comments: Chris, that's hilarious. I figured it was only a matter of time before he overstepped his bounds trying to control public parking. Glad it wasn't a worse altercation.

Comments: Leo, mnatti is right about this one. Not in Stage Fort, parking sucks, and there isn't much else in the immediate area unless you own that bitchin' mansion right on the water with its own fenced off overhanging boulder...sigh...

Comments: Just wanted to add that as you are walking along the small cliff-line of Down Under towards Doug's Roof, you will be able to see the Cape Ann Veterinary Hospital (big brown building) off to your right (east).

If it is winter and the leaves are down, it will seem VERY CLOSE to you. So please be respectful by keeping noise to a minimum if it's during business hours. The owner is understanding of climbers, but let's keep that image positive.

Climb it while it's good! Once this cliff gets hit wi... more >>

Comments: Chris,

Your solution comes across as selfish, especially considering that the Down Under area is ALREADY IN THE DATABASE and has been for years. You could simply click on that area instead of Redrock when you are adding all of these lines, right?!?!

You seem to be simply adding routes for uploading's sake and not caring that you are creating more work and confusion. You are NOT the only person that will be posting up routes in these areas.

Just because you park at the same lot does NOT ma... more >>

Comments: Maybe we could file this one and the others you've recently added under the area already created for Doug's Roof? (i.e. Down Under )

Things are going to get confusing real fast with all of these additions under the general heading of Redrock, especially when these routes are NOT part of the Redrock area.

Comments: Thanks for your hard work, Jim!

Not only did you clean and bolt a great looking route, but you've sparked more conversation in the Mass forum than there has been in months!

While I share your sentiments that I should be climbing instead of forum-posting, I gotta do SOMETHING while I'm sitting in class.

Comments: I'm not sure if I'm amused or annoyed that the only time there appears to be any kind of "climbing community" in Cape Ann is when people get riled over bolt removal.

Just imagine if a few of these bolt-chiseling ghosts got together and worked on a more fruitful pursuit, such as re-instating climber's access to places like the Mod-Gripping Quarry or Mount Ann?

Why is it that the "old-timer" Cape Ann climbers would rather spend their time complaining and chiseling out 2 or 3 unwanted bolts on t... more >>

Comments: I've never taken the time to go fishing for that kind of info, but you're absolutely right that the town hall is where to start if someone wants to go after this project.

The truth is, access is a pervasive problem in Mass, where tightly packed houses, winding streets, and ever-increasing development break up what little natural forest remains into inaccessible islands. This often forces you to park along private roads or to hike in from afar, which can be an uncomfortable experience as you and... more >>

Comments: Hey Officer Dangle,

Things are a bit sketchy at Mt. Ann, as they have been for quite a while now.

The reason is that some douchebag bought the house right next to the green gate where we used to park at the end of New Way Lane, and he has the delusion that his property includes that parking area as well as the nicest cluster of boulders. Therefore, any time that you show up and he's home, expect a confrontation and likely the cops will be called (yes, even though it's not his land). I don't ... more >>

Comments: I completely disagree with Kangaru Rat.

Jesse, I think you've done a great job adding these routes to the database. It is the necessary first step in the process of compiling an accurate history of the area. If people with any helpful information (pay attention Kangaru Rat) want to offer their knowledge of the routes or the area's history, then they are free to do so and the routes can be updated appropriately.

Until then, I don't think it is necessary to pollute the database with countless "... more >>

Comments: To get to the Cavalry Boulder Field:

Park at the Red Rock parking lot (marked in the picture) off Exit 14 on 128.

Hike WEST on Rt. 133 until you see the trailhead on the North side of the road. It is marked with a little white Essex Greenbelt sign.

Follow this main trail (drawn in ORANGE on the map) into the woods.

There is a NEW TRAIL (drawn in BLUE on the map) that you can now take, which is marked by these little white Greenbelt signs and you get on it by turning right off of the main ... more >>

So yeah, that's how hard it is to follow the damn Extensions trail.

Comments: March can be a complete toss-up, especially in the area around Foxboro. And much of Gilbert Hills is forested, so it doesn't quite get the sun needed to melt things quickly.

However, if the weather holds right you could have some nice conditions, albeit a bit muddy/swampy.

Another thing to consider depending on the forecast is shoveling off the top-outs and landing zone early in the week and hope for some meltage, then go back and climb later.

Yet another option is always Lincoln Woods, RI... more >>

Comments: Just wanted to add that this boulder is like 40 feet from the backside of the parking lot for the Cape Ann Vet Hospital. You can clearly see it from the parking lot in the winter. So, if you are hunting for either this one or Doug's Roof, then you will know you are too deep in the woods if you can't see the clinic through the trees.

Comments: Hey, thanks for posting this up. Just a little correction, there is no way this thing is 75 feet tall. There isn't a single climb at The Quarries that is that high. Ha, sadly that would be a contender for the longest climb in Massachusetts if it were that tall!
