Comments: Horribly, another Black Hills legend has fallen. Loretta Muehl was REAL. She was one of the most talented people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I knew her as an incredible artist, teacher and sailor. I only new Loretta for thirteen years but her generosity and kindness were unequaled and her views on life constantly entertained me. If you are a frequent visitor to the hills you have undoubtedly heard "Renn Fenton" stories. I would like to quickly share a "Loretta" story. As I sai... more >>

Comments: This is in reference to the anchors that were placed on top of this climb. I believe they were placed two or three years ago. Two of the first ascentionist (Cindy Tolle and Everett Auckom) asked a friend of mine to place the rap bolts as they had planned to do so when they put the climb up but they were weathered off. They just never got around to it. I sincerely hope that this puts an end to this issue. If you really want to simul-rap so bad go climb Tricouni Nail, it is a much better rap ... more >>

Comments: Dan- Thanks for the mail and the comments. I tried to reply but for some reason it won't go through, didn't want you to think I was blowing you off. My family and I just left the needles the other day. I'm a school teacher in Wichita, Kansas but I hope to get back up for a few days this fall. Maybe we could get together and climb.

Comments: In response to the last comment, I believe that there is enough room at the needles to have it all. Like many of you, I have climbed all over the country and have been to areas that are grid bolted with a sport climb every four feet down a wall and I simply don't see it happening in the needles, the rock doesn't lend itself to this practice.I certainly don't want to see any bolts added to climbs like Super Pin, Hairy Pin, Needles Eye, etc.... I think that these climbs should retain their mystiq... more >>

Comments: In reference to the route that goes up the arete to the right of Trojan Determination, this route was rap bolted and I believe it is called, pardon my language, "Sport Fucking". It is kind of goofy clipping some of the bolts and I believe it is about 10b. A lot of people take their chances with this route so that they can safely climb the classic line on the rock via toprope!

Comments: I don't want all of the simul-raps to disappear either Angela. However, the first ascentionists of "Lander" never intended for it to be a simul-rap, they got weathered off while putting up the route and just never got around to putting an anchor up because it was possible to get off with a "needles rap" but that wasn't their intention just in case you were wondering. It is nice to be able to discuss this intelligently and I certainly respect your opinion. Climb on!
