Comments: Wow, I just stumbled on this gem of a photo. Mtn. Project surprises again.
I climbed a bunch with Ken back in the '70s. He was a great guy , super solid and calm when the chips were down. We climbed the Higher Cathedral Spire in winter and made what was my first El Cap attempt in winter. We were lucky to survive the ice chunk (tv to refrigerator sized pieces) bombardment.
I was just a kid but he, at 11 yrs. older, was a man. I looked up to him and would have followed him anywhere. He died way ... more >>

Comments: Randy Vogel is without a doubt the reigning expert on Joshua Tree rock climbing. I've got a whole bookshelf devoted to his works. This book, however, stands out as the most beautiful guide yet done to any area by any author. It is not just a guide but a work evoking the feelings and experiences of a generation of climbers as they trekked around Joshua Tree exploring and climbing or just soaking up the vibe of this magical place. Finally, a book that does justice to this sublime desert paradise.... more >>

Comments: Todd Gordon and I did what I believe was possibly the second ascent in April 1985. I remember the first two pitches as tricky. We continued to the top of Black Velvet Peak for 15 pitches, many of them after dark. We got down to the car around midnight to find our friend Holly asleep and dinner very cold. She was more annoyed than worried.
It was a long day.

Comments: This route (Grand Theft Avocado) is named after a funny event that happened to Spencer Lennard, his brother Alan and friends Chris Robinson and Barry Talberg when in high school. They, devout vegetarians, were visiting an avocado grove near their home in Orange, CA for the purposes of collecting avos (the fallen ripe ones on the ground, of course). While collecting, they were surprised by an Irvine Co. OC Sheriff who was not pleased by their trespassing on "Company" property (yes, the Irvine Co.... more >>
