Comments: I did this route in on July 1, 1977 with Sibylle Hechtel. I don't remember much about it except for that chimney and that it was a great adventure. My notes say IV 5.9, 9 pitches, 6 hours (I have a feeling we alpined parts). We did Cucumbers on Cardinal Lodge 2 days after and The Smokestack the day after that (July 4th). It was a big weekend!

Comments: AJ and I climbed this route a couple of days ago. We felt the first pitch is borderline 10a. The belay at the piton and loose tree is solid if backed up with a large cam in the roof below the pin. It was less inspiring rapping on just the loose tree and the pin on our way down.

The second pitch only had 3 bolts and was scary for me. I'm a little rusty on that type of climbing. I'm not sure where the 4th bolt used to be but I would have enjoyed it in a couple of different spots.

The third pitc... more >>

Comments: See photo not taken by me.

In this shot Mr. Gordon is just about in bolt placing position, maybe 3-5 feet to the right. We are talkin' EPIC placement. Without a doubt the hardest effort to place a bolt free, on the lead, I've ever seen and believe me, I would much rather brag about my own rad bolt placements than his.

Manly, IT IS!

Comments: I led the crux of this route on the FA and we named it “Sanctuary.” I thought this a much more poetic and prosaic name and fitting of the Grotto theme. Somehow Craig foisted the name BoC onto it since he was looking to plug in reggae names here and there to anything that came along, this was a great injustice indeed, especially from a person so outspoken on the great injustices in his life. He led on “Morning Thunder” so….whatever.

To Brendan: I'm going to make a point of doing this route in th... more >>

Comments: Roy McClenahan led this the day we did the FA of Cowboy Junkies and I thought it was continuously hard, i.e. hard to start and hard between every bolt. As Murph noted the crux was up high. 11a/b for sure.

Comments: Roy lead the crux (and maybe the whole pitch in one push) on the FA and it was quite proud!

Comments: It was kinda' funny on the day of the FA. We all got to the base and no one jumped up to claim the lead. Maybe the approach had taken something out of us or the look of the route intimidated us. Finally I claimed it and boy was I glad! It was only 10c (well within my leading ability) and mega classic. I'm not sure why what's his name gave less stars, maybe tight undies?

Comments: FA: Rob Stahl, D. Evans, C. Fry, Tom Burke Jan 1990

We also did the start without the tree. I'm glad to hear it's the "easiest 10c in the park!" Maybe it was all the snow on the approach? I've been checking the archive notes and it says "snow covered."

Comments: Correction: Todd must have been confused.

"Remain in Light".... We first called it "The White Arete" but "Remain in Light" was much Better.

Comments: Sibylle Hechtel and I did the second free ascent of this route in July 1977. We did 18 pitches in 9 hours, I led 15 and Sibylle led 3. It was one of my proudest days in the mountains!!!

I thought the FFA was in 1976 but Chris should know.

It was just a couple weeks before Richard Harrison and Jay Smith did the third free ascent.

I'm still kicking myself for not carrying a camera.
