Comments: Edited. Karl, or anyone else, let me know if there are any mistakes. And is there a name for the face that has Fun in the Sun?

Comments: Made an attempt on the approach to Organ Half Dome this past weekend. It's pretty much all thorns and cactus about neck high. Maybe with some heavy pants, coats, and a face shield it's approachable. Gotta love the desert right?!? But apparently there's a route up the left crack/ledge and a bolted rap off the right side that was put in by some 80's climbers.

Comments: On Elervum’s Cove when doing the (P) Route from the Lost Causes guide, or the route that splits to a 10&11 near the top. Are there chains or anything to rap off of? I know there's that one bolt on the 11. We didnt make it to the top cause we weren't sure if there was a rap down...

Comments: To all you climbers stuck in Charleston, IL, don't feel bad. I grew up in the countryside, and go down any creek for long enough you'll find something to climb. The map I posted above has a spot of mine with a 20-30ft sandstone cliff. Rock quality is so so, if I still lived there I'd get a pic of the face. The Embarrass River has some faces too, but you gotta wade upstream for a few hours. Happy climbing!

Location: NM : Las Cruces Area Climbing : Organ Mountains : La Cueva : Shady Side : This is not a test (5.10) By: cuclimbing When: Dec 4, 2008 | view comment >> |
Comments: I think a 5.10 is a good rating. What a fun route! And those top bolts are a mystery to me too...unless someone can find a route up that mess right below them without taking out your belayer with rock.

Comments: I've heard a people refer to a "mini half-dome" somewhere in the Organs on the West side. I feel like they're talking about something that's around the dripping springs area...Anyone else heard this or know what I'm talking about?

Location: NM : Las Cruces Area Climbing : Organ Mountains : Bishops Cap/Pena Blanca : The Garden : ... : Zig-zag Crack (5.11-) By: cuclimbing When: Nov 26, 2008 | view comment >> |
Comments: I'm not sure if this is the same route as described. But instead of staying along the crack system, after the first crux stay to the left(on the face) and follow a very minor crack to thimble hold face climb. Lots of fun and very challenging. Make sure you're belayer is back as there are some loose rocks. I throw some pics up once they're developed.

Location: NM : Las Cruces Area Climbing : Organ Mountains : Bishops Cap/Pena Blanca : The Garden : ... : Speak in English (5.9+) By: cuclimbing When: Nov 26, 2008 | view comment >> |
Comments: I just climbed "Speak in English" a few days ago, and the upper section is feeling a lot looser than it has in the past. Also a solid hold, a plate size about 20cm x 20cm x 3cm, about half way up broke under my weight of 65kg...

Comments: I think I gave it an R for TR, trad is pretty safe. Like you said, those hangers are old. If the consensus is 5.9, I'll change it. feel free to vote. happy climbing!

Comments: Some of the other formations east of La Cueva have a few routes. I've seen a few old pitons and bolts there. I'll try to get some pics and routes up soon.

Location: NM : Las Cruces Area Climbing : Dona Ana Mountains : Checkerboard Wall By: cuclimbing When: Mar 25, 2008 | view comment >> |
Comments: Once you get to the top, follow the saddle back to the next summit. You can find a little Ginkgo Biloba bottle with a summit log on the rock pile. I'll try to put a summit log by checkerboard next time I'm up. There are also some awesome 100-200 ft pitches on the west side of the second summit, check it out it's worth the time.

Comments: Do NOT use the two anchors at the top of the route. They have quite a bit of shifting on the hangers. When I rebolt the route I'll post it. Should be perfect for Trad until then. Good luck!

Comments: Once at the top, go to the V in the middle. there's a nice place to chill. You can access the anchors for Bolted Chimney easily on the shady side or follow the ledge leading right to other routes.

Comments: Climbing on the face, right side of crack, is pretty fun. some loose rock but not bad. we nick-named this the butt-crack for obvious reasons...so if you need help finding it you know what to look for
