Comments: Steve; As for the South face of the chimney the aid consisted of RURPS, tied off knife blades an very small wired chocks and the old copper mashies. above the overhang it goes all free (A3, A4)

As for chimney routes hoys Chimney on the west side of the needle is about the longest chimney route in the Sandias. It ends up on the Southwest ridge right before you get to the fifth avenue level. It's not very hard but pretty fun.

Comments: Does anyone climb in the El Porvenir canyon outside of Las Vegas? I remember that there were some decent faces most of which hadn't had much climbing activity?

Comments: I've been out of the rock climbing scene for a while now so I'm not sure where the new route is I just know thats where we went back in 73. The buldge above the bolt was the hardest move on the climb.

Comments: When Mike and I first climbed this no one had done any routes on the main face of Muralla Grande so we went loaded for bear. We had a full set of aid equipment hamocks and food and water for a couple of days. We camped on the top of Chimney canyon the night before so we could get an early start. Mike always led and so I was the packhorse climbing alpine style with a fairly heavy rucksack with all our gear in it. By the second to last pitch I was having some cramping with my forearms and just aft... more >>

Comments: I know what you mean. A lot of the routes in Mikes book were relayed after the facts and sometimes many beers. Thats why after a few inquires I decided to write down the original route description to Clarks Cramps. See routes.

Comments: If after you complete the traverse to the dihedral on the second to last pitch instead of going up the dihedral you continue left and up, there is a wonderful large lunch ledge with one of the best views in the Sandias. From here there is a nice short vertical face climb that leads to the easy ridge that ends at the top.
