Comments: A cool feature of mountain project is the "Difficulty Rating" graph for each area (scroll up on this page). For Spearfish, it looks like a nice bell curve centered at 5.11, but actually slightly skewed towards the 5.10 side and away from the 5.12 side. Looks like there are about 150 5.11 routes, 130 5.10 routes, and 120 5.12 routes, with maybe 60 5.9 and under routes.

Thanks for the hard work Mike, and good to see you out there a couple weeks ago at the Shadowlands/Icebox.

Comments: A bit late to answer the question posed above -- this route starts by scrambling to the top of the large detached flake to the left side of the wall, stepping across to the wall from the very top of this flake, and starting there. Goes up and trends left after the 2nd bolt. FANTASTIC route that will test your route-reading skills, and is intimidating from the get go. A bit easier and shorter than it's bigger brother Mr. Critical. Shaded in the morning.

Comments: Checked with Dave G. Original line went left into the crack as this photo of Kris shows. The lower section you added is likely new. Nice job.

Comments: There really isn't much of a shoulder on the road right there. The cliff goes almost right into the road. Here is a photo -- mountainproject.com/v/10603481...

I think they closed it to climbing because you have to almost stand in the road to belay. I also heard that people were parking their cars to block part of the road as well (to try to make sure they didn't get hit by a car while belaying) -- but the rumor is that that was also not appreciated by some of the locals. If I still l... more >>

Comments: I think this (moving left into that crack) is how most people climb it. Love to hear what Groth says.

Comments: A user has updated the description of this area, please see the second paragraph under "description" above. Anyone care to comment on the accuracy of that statement? Jacob? I heard Freddy got a ticket within the past couple years for climbing at Granddad's -- but have not spoken with him personally. Comments? New info?

Comments: I've talked with a few people after writing this. I think it depends on height and preferred style of climbing. Shorter burlier climbers will have an easier time with this move? Felt impossible-ish to me.

Comments: I agree 5.8 seems a bit sandbagged, but the worst part of this excellent route was the fear of the cheese grater effect from potentially falling. Thanks to Aaron Costello for not making excessive fun of me for squealing like a schoolgirl upon making the crux move up high over the slabby bulge.
