This problem haunted my dreams for 6 years after failing to send in 2008. Finally got throw a heel over the lip jug -- now I can sleep. Photo Darin Limvere.

Comments: LOL, this was actually a film camera photo that I scanned. I am 99% sure I used a polarizing filter which I guess is old school for added saturation though. :)

Comments: Doesn't this boulder problem qualify as a 4 star problem? Nice setting, an obvious start hold, interesting moves, a topout, and a relatively flat landing. All the stars. Nicely done, Paul.

Comments: Do not expect biners at the chains for the climbs. They have repeatedly been placed and then removed by people who should know better.

Also DO NOT PARK IN THE HORSE BARN LOT TO CLIMB AT QUAL WALL. PARK ALONG THE ROAD. THE RANGERS HAVE MADE IT CLEAR THEY DON'T WANT CLIMBERS PARKING IN THAT GRASS LOT.

Comments: Yo Pontoon, check this guidebook out, excellent directions, and GPS to plug in as well for the individual parking spots for each crag.

Comments: The downed trees are tricky because you are allowed to cut up fallen trees for campfires, but for that you need to rent a group site. You can't just show up and start cutting. So, the WCA is coordinating a time for that to happen but it won't be in the next few weeks probably. There is still plenty to climb.

If you get bored there, the "north shore" area at DL is easy to find, and from there you can hike the east bluff trail and there is a lot that's easy to find along there, too. Likewis... more >>

Comments: John- how much time you got and what are your goals? High concentration of stuff with easy approaches at gov dodge, but rock can be suspect. DL stuff is more spread out with better rock but longer approaches. Either area you choose I'm sure you will have fun. There was a storm that knocked over some trees at the best area at the dodge recently (group camp B) and some problems are covered on deadfall right now.

Comments: I have not climbed this one but heard from others that the top is quite difficult. Maybe next time out there I'll have to give it a try!

Comments: May just be a "variation" (I don't know what EZ did on FA) but we weren't sure about those semi-detached blocky feet at the start. It goes both ways, but is obviously easier with the blocky feet (and much less painful). Seemed like old school V5 (V6?) without them, V4 or so with. Either way, fun problem with a sweet approach.

Comments: A cool feature of mountain project is the "Difficulty Rating" graph for each area (scroll up on this page). For Spearfish, it looks like a nice bell curve centered at 5.11, but actually slightly skewed towards the 5.10 side and away from the 5.12 side. Looks like there are about 150 5.11 routes, 130 5.10 routes, and 120 5.12 routes, with maybe 60 5.9 and under routes.

Thanks for the hard work Mike, and good to see you out there a couple weeks ago at the Shadowlands/Icebox.

Comments: A bit late to answer the question posed above -- this route starts by scrambling to the top of the large detached flake to the left side of the wall, stepping across to the wall from the very top of this flake, and starting there. Goes up and trends left after the 2nd bolt. EXCELLENT route that will test your route-reading skills, and is intimidating from the get go. A bit easier and shorter than it's bigger brother Mr. Critical. Shaded in the morning.

Comments: There really isn't much of a shoulder on the road right there. The cliff goes almost right into the road. Here is a photo -- mountainproject.com/v/10603481...

I think they closed it to climbing because you have to almost stand in the road to belay. I also heard that people were parking their cars to block part of the road as well (to try to make sure they didn't get hit by a car while belaying) -- but the rumor is that that was also not appreciated by some of the locals. If I still l... more >>

Comments: I think this (moving left into that crack) is how most people climb it. Love to hear what Groth says.
