Comments: Direct in this case would mean taking every tower head on and climbing it all the way to the summit of Feather Peak. Fred and I skirted each one around its base.

Comments: If the post above is a more direct start - sounds good. As I think my party started too far to the left. Thanks for the advice on the dangerous loose second to last pitch - I seem to remember that, but it was 20 years ago. I do remember being very nervous with the anchor at the top of that pitch and urging my partner, who led the last pitch to get bomber pro as soon as possible.

Comments: Well I see that this area is to cover anything accessed from the west - this peak is accessed from the west.

However I don't agree with this as a driver, because many peaks can be accessed from both sides. The original intent of "High Sierra" was to include any peak in the range whether it was accessible from any compass point. Needless to say the system continues to move towards more and more complication and therefore a more complex hierarchy.

It appears I'm in the minority in trying to keep... more >>

Comments: I'm fairly certain that a lead fall from the lieback on small cams would be an equipment failure scenario. I've led the route and did not trust the small cams I placed at all.

Comments: There's a route up the left edge also, on smaller holds at the top. It's a little bit more challenging.

Comments: Thanks, good to know Bryan. The likelihood of a fall increases with the difficulty of the rating. Over the last 45 years, Class 3 has not phased me much as I know that I probably won't fall, however there is one Class 3 climb which bothered me, and that was this one on Middle Pal. Perhaps I was having an off day, perhaps it was the thought of having to reverse all of those moves, perhaps it was the exposure, I don't know. This photo shows the most difficult move on the whole route, although ther... more >>

Comments: Technical rating does not consider the consequences of a fall. Class 3 is a technical rating. You could be killed on a Class 1. This is the shortcoming of the TDS (or YDS). This is why people added G, PG, R and X at a later date, but only added it to Class 5.

Thanks Jeff.

Comments: How many 5.6 moves do I find on a 1000 feet of Class 3? Lots. I'm a pretty good route finder so I'd say yes, this was the path of least resistance as far as I could tell.

And as far as the camera angle making it look worse is concerned, well it felt pretty deadly. In fact the whole climb felt pretty deadly. Which I must confess is rare for Class 3.
