Comments: Route follows ridgeline to the right of the small snow patch 2/3 of the way to the summit.

Comments: I must confess I have only done the descent three times - I have never rappelled and can't remember it being hard - just needing some route-finding.

Comments: A fun route, if broken in areas, the final pitch dumps you (literally) on a narrow ridge with outstanding views. The summit block is not for the faint-hearted.

Comments: The barely there North Couloir can be see as a diagonal snow chute running from left to right.

Comments: Good picture of the couloir here.

This is the standard descent route from the summit - and can be problematic during a descent, finding where to get off the ridge and using the rappels (take note on the way up). There has been at least one fatality on this route during a descent; check the rappel slings. The crossing from the top of the couloir to the start of the upper section is extremely exposed, needless to say in both directions - don't underestimate the route.

Comments: ROAD IS NOW OPEN

Follow the Rim of the World Drive from Fawnskin then turn left onto 2N58 follow it south west, the north then back east for a few miles past Hanna, Lego and to the Coven parking described above. The Snowslide road is still closed.

Comments: Direct in this case would mean taking every tower head on and climbing it all the way to the summit of Feather Peak. Fred and I skirted each one around its base.

Comments: If the post above is a more direct start - sounds good. As I think my party started too far to the left. Thanks for the advice on the dangerous loose second to last pitch - I seem to remember that, but it was 20 years ago. I do remember being very nervous with the anchor at the top of that pitch and urging my partner, who led the last pitch to get bomber pro as soon as possible.

Comments: Well I see that this area is to cover anything accessed from the west - this peak is accessed from the west.

However I don't agree with this as a driver, because many peaks can be accessed from both sides. The original intent of "High Sierra" was to include any peak in the range whether it was accessible from any compass point. Needless to say the system continues to move towards more and more complication and therefore a more complex hierarchy.

It appears I'm in the minority in trying to keep... more >>
