Comments: This climb can be lead with good small to mid sized cams placed in each of the horizontals found at about 12-15 foot intervals along the route. The crux moves will have your gear below your feet but you are shooting for nice sizable and positive holds above it with one final horizontal for pro. A really cool climb with long reaches between small in-cuts!

Comments: This is very cool Kris! Does this route share some of the moves of the variation to the route Eave of Destruction. There is a route variation rated 5.7 in Swartling's guide and I have always kind of scratched my head on that one. You should draw a topo line of a photo. I like the east coast tactics utilizing the taped down sky hooks! One other thing... have you led Jungle VIP to the left yet?

Comments: It's a stiff 5.8 at that. The moves past the overhang off the ledge are insecure and then, although it is juggy at the top, it is steep and thuggish.

Comments: I was staring at Bagatelle for probably my 100th time on Saturday but this time I was looking extra carefully to see where these "mysterious" gear placements are..... amazing...... although I do remember once back in the 80's watching a DLFA dude solo aid it with just hooks and knife blades that were hand placed... I was in awe then too.

Comments: Huh? I may have been seeing things or maybe just over stated. I was wondering why the ones I really for sure saw weren't really washing off in the solid rain I was standing in. Did you think that mash up Chris. Pretty dam funny. I left tick marks on a couple of 5.10s over at the West Bluff myself recently. I am bad and rarely boulder myself...

Comments: I saw distinct and highly visible little square tick marks left all the way up both Bagatelle and Phlogiston this weekend as well. Doesn't really bother me much at all but I did notice.

Comments: First 15 feet. No pro if you climb that first section straight on. Like I said in the route description, it is possible to climb up on the right and then step along the ledge to the business.

Comments: Joel...

It doesn't factor into the grade. I am not sure why I had that gear rating included. I dropped it.

This a quite well protected lead.

Comments: I added well known Colorado climber Jim Erickson to the list of notables who had a hand in early contributions to Devil's Lake. There are many routes free climbed first by Jim Erickson at Devil's Lake back in the 70's. Plus..... Jim Erickson sights Devil's Lake as one of the first places he utilized his early and innovative version of the "quick draw".

Comments: Agreed. It didn't seem like the route warranted an X rating though as There are a couple OK placements. You are quite high up with a lot of rope out so there would be some dynamic rope force absorption going on as well.

Comments: The gear is small but there. Tiny shallow cam right off the bat that maybe isn't really high enough to really make any difference. You can get cams and small tri-cams in at the horizontal over on the right at about the 20-25 ft mark. You can get side gear (wired nut) in the crack that leads off to the right. That crack maybe off route if you are behold'n to the guidebook description. Above the steep part where the route transitions to more slabby rock you get more really small wires and cam... more >>
