Comments: Paul, the question of route vs. rope length is not new -- think back to rope length progression of 45, 50, 55, and 60 meters. It is interesting that you question this route, yet say nothing of Natural Selection nearby, which if done with one rope probably requires an 85 meter cord.

Other long routes in CCC include Get a Job & Job Review at Highlander (80-85 meter rope), Leftover Stuff at Wall of the 90s (65-70 meter rope), and Hot Stuff at Wall of the 90's (80 meter rope). Many of us learned ... more >>

Comments: Beta haters: stop reading now. A right heel hook is helpful for the opening moves. The rock surface on the fins is still a little grainy, but once it cleans up, this will be a very enjoyable route.

Comments: For a route that really isn't all that long, there's a lot of variety in this climb -- face climbing, hand jams, a balancy section, and a slab finish.

Comments: A fun route with moves which appear harder than 5.9 before committing to them, but are actually 5.9. A nice addition to the area.

Comments: I agree with Dave on the 10b rating. Although the bolts aren't as close as they can be on other Cactus routes, I felt the solid hand and finger jams resulted in confident climbing. Maybe my paws just fit the cracks well. A fun route.

Comments: After doing the route a second time, I'd say the rating is a little soft. Call it 5.10c or so.

Comments: The last couple of bolts are a little runout compared to the closely-spaced bolts near the two lower roofs, but the climbing is fairly easy. However, these last bolts can be supplemented with finger-sized cams.

Comments: The 5.9 Left Variation to Risky Business has only 5 bolts. After forking left into the crack the options include: clipping the 5th bolt of the direct line with a long sling (a fall would result in an interesting swing), plugging a finger-sized or so cam half way up the left crack (smarter), or just running it out to the high cold shut left of the crack (burly and not so smart).

Comments: I think the route can be made 5.9 by staying slightly left of the bolts. But the path of least resistance stays on the bolt line, and sometimes uses cracks right of the bolts. Moderate routes don't get much better than this.

Comments: Yes, the crux is short, the roof move really isn't all that bad if your footwork is solid, and the route has a distinctive change in character after the second bolt. But I liked it. However, it seemed odd to clip a bolt from a solid hand jam. I've probably placed as many stoppers and cams as I have clipped bolts, and I appreciate the traditions and commitment that gear routes represent. As a general rule, I don't think protectable cracks need bolts. For me, however, the bolts seem to work her... more >>
