Showing some alternatives for P2:

One can skip the initial bolts by starting deeper in the chimney and enduring a little more runout. With back to bolted side and deeper in it, this initial part is much easier than 5.8+.

Also shown is the alternative of continuing up the remainder of the chimney and finally emerging not far below the last bolt of the pitch - it's a #4 big bro way up there. Circa 1980 "Field Copy" of Checkerboard Wall, courtesy of [105794406] Pic is from the top of 606, of Larry on belay for Evan leading Runnel Runner. A question about the route Poontang, regarding the protection on pitch 2:

I'm guessing the bolts marked here are for the end of P2 of Poontang after the last traverse to the left. Poontang is 5.10, grade III in Hill's guide. These bolts are about 30 feet right of the bolts at the back of a huge ledge (end of pitch 2 for both Water Stains & Cave Route).

For Poontang, Hill's guide states "Several small pitons might be reassuring on the second pitch." Anyone know whether that is still the case? This may actually be the original way the first couple pitches go based on Mike Hill's guide and some exploratory climbing the other day.

Hill's guide mentions that one accesses the pine tree near the end of the arrow via "... a short gully up and left ...." See description of Poontang in Hill's 3rd Ed.; also see the topo on page 137 showing how to start Water Stains and Poontang.
