Comments: Echo Cliffs is a wonderful area and the recent sunny warm days this Fall have made for awesome climbing. Saturday was beautiful and there was hardly anyone at Echo Cliffs. Unfortunately, there seems to be a trend developing down at the Far Side with parties responding to the call-of-nature and NOT venturing off the trail and/or packing their trash out. An awful mess has been created on the approach to Black Face/Energy Wall with groups feeling this is the restroom. Please remind climbers that yo... more >>

Location: CA : Los Angeles County : Santa Monica Mountains : Echo Cliffs : The Grotto : Garden of Expectations (5.10a)
By: Benjamin Chapman When: 6 days ago

Comments: Garden of Expectations was climbed by Tony Bird on Saturday, Nov. 21 and confirmed the 5.10a rating. He found challenging steep face moves above the 1st bolt lead to more moderate climbing to reach a thought provoking steep, usually sunlit, slab containing a fun crack and an assortment of small pockets and the anchor. Stellar rock.

Comments: Psychedelic Sally saw ascents by three parties on Saturday, Nov.21
Consensus is that the rating is 5.6 As with all routes at Echo Cliffs this route will clean-up with time. The moves are entertaining and the protection excellent.

Location: CA : Los Angeles County : Santa Monica Mountains : Echo Cliffs : The Grotto : Mystic River (5.8)
By: Benjamin Chapman When: Oct 24, 2009

Comments: Watched 4 parties climb "Mystic River" today, a total of 13 climbers, and the consensus being that they're grateful that this climb has been put up. All indicated that the climb involves a variety of climbing techniques, excellent protection, stellar rock, and was cool in the shade while the remainder of Echo Cliffs was hot.

Location: CA : Los Angeles County : Santa Monica Mountains : Echo Cliffs : Easy Street : The Serpent (5.10a)
By: Benjamin Chapman When: Oct 20, 2009

Comments: The 2nd pitch of "The Serpent" is excellent. Most of the holds seem to be very solid, positive, although small, holds. At the crux, 5th bolt, the holds to the right of the water streak seem more positive than going straight up over the 5th and 6th bolt. We pulled off several large loose flakes just below the P1 anchor and cleaned and brushed the holds on the 1st pitch. Nice climb.

Comments: Blacklisted (5.9)
This climb is excellent and well worth the hike. An initial steep, tricky bulge leads to steep slabby climbing and a final headwall section. Unfortunately, the anchors for Blacklisted are badly rusted and deteriorating and often have debris stuck in them due to their position in a water drainage course.
A slight rightward traverse to the Blackballed (5.10b) anchor provides an excellent steep pocket pulling link-up with Blackballed and provides anchors in much better condition. ... more >>

Comments: Black Crack (5.8)
This is a very nice climb and one of the few cracks at Echo Cliffs. It's a long trek to this end of the cliff band, but worth the time and effort. The initial moves of "Black Crack" seem more like 5.9
The opening moves overhang slightly and good footwork is important to enabling one to maintain the insecure jams. Once established in the crack the difficulty eases considerably and the climb is well protected by 7 bolts.

Location: CA : Los Angeles County : Santa Monica Mountains : Echo Cliffs : Easy Street : Charlie Hustle (5.10a)
By: Benjamin Chapman When: Oct 5, 2009

Comments: Saw a party of four doing the 1st pitch of "Charlie Hustle" yesterday. Consensus was that it is a nice challenging route, but needs more traffic to clean off the loose holds. Nice moves and well protected. The party didn't realize that there is a 2nd pitch as the climb isn't in the current Anderson guidebook and the hangers/bolts are camouflaged so they blend in with the surrounding rock very well.

Location: CA : Los Angeles County : Santa Monica Mountains : Echo Cliffs : Easy Street : Harvey (5.8-)
By: Benjamin Chapman When: Oct 5, 2009

Comments: Harvey is a nice addition to the Easy Street area of the Far Side. This is a fun climb on nice positive incut edges and the occasional pocket. The protection is excellent. The rock on the 2nd pitch is stellar and there is a good feeling of exposure.

Comments: Too cute, but not responsible to "habituate" deer to humans, cars, etc. Not good for the deer and highly dangerous for the driver. Don't think the photos from the ER would be nearly so cute.

Location: CA : San Bernardino Mountains : Keller Peak : Children's Forest : Preschool Rock : Potty Trained (5.10c)
By: Benjamin Chapman When: Sep 28, 2009

Comments: "Potty Trained" (5.10c) is an excellent thin slab. The climb involved interesting thin face moves on "potato chip" edges. There are 3 bolts to a single bolt with a chain and another hole where the anchor must have been. As it is the bolt with the chain becomes the 4th bolt and 10ft higher are two more bolts (widely spaced and not equipped for lowering).

Comments: Not certain what BGraham's issue was with "Easy As Your Sister's Best Friend," but we thought this was a very clean, enjoyable route with lots of interesting features. The climb begins with an easy, well protected slab to a steep and thought provoking bulge and finishes with another fun and easy slab to the anchors. Yes, the nut on the left anchor bolt is loose, but a simple tweak with a small wrench solved that issue. Great area, hadn't climbed here in 26 years, but the new routes were apprecia... more >>

Comments: Located in The Grotto on the steep orange buttress between Lowrider and Superfly. Begins in the blocky corner 10ft. right of Lowrider and continues up the crack to a ledge with large blocks. Continue up the steep orange face past 4 more bolts. Steep and pumpy climbing on small positive features and pockets. Very popular. 7 bolts and 2-ring Fixe anchor.

Comments: Nice long multi-pitch route. Good protection, excellent position, and fun climbing on unique features. Gets steep and pumpy on good positive holds. Needs more ascents to clean the suspect holds.

Comments: Where is the section at Mountain Project for Echo Cliffs climbing routes and information? Shouldn't there to a section for this very popular crag?

Comments: This is a great photo of Echo Cliffs, but it's not taken from the descent trail. The vantage point is from the Mishe Mokwa Trail at a prominence frequented by hikers to gaze down on the climbers at the Java Wall. This photo was taken about 200 yards west of the top of the descent trail towards Split Rock.

Comments: The 4 rung "via ferrata" no longer this 4 rungs, as the 2nd rung (that the climber is about to grab with their right hand) is no longer there.
