| The second ridge pitch. After cresting the ridge the grade is mellow but it may be a good opportunity to practice simulclimbing. The ridge is all low-angle with plenty of holds. You can find pro if yo | CO : Flatirons : ... : Direct Route (5.6 R) | | Aug 9, 2005 |

Location: CO : Alpine Rock : The Crestones : Ellingwood Ledges (5.7) By: Ben When: Aug 23, 2005 | view comment >> | Comments: Just from reading all the beta on this site, I was able to stay on the route the whole time. Here's what we found: Heading almost straight up from the red tower, you reach a small bulge with an old piton at about eye level. Our first pitch went over the bulge with one 5.7+ move, and then angled up to the left at about 5.4 to a nice ledge below the obvious headwall chimney/crack. This next pitch was hard! about 55 meters of SOLID 5.7 at roughly 13,700 ft. with a pack. The pitch is broken into 3 s... more >>

Location: CO : Boulder : Flatirons : Central : Fourth Flatiron : No Balls At All (V1) By: Ben When: Jul 26, 2005 | view comment >> | Comments: Maybe we should stop encouraging the negative image of Front Range Climbers by quabbling over ratings and other ARBITRARY things. Assuming that you used the term AC as a derogotory term for aid climber, give it a rest and remember what brings people out to the crags in first place. Climb and let climb you maladjusted boulderer you...

Location: CO : Boulder : Eldorado Canyon SP : Redgarden Wall : Redgarden - Lumpe to the to... : Rewritten (5.7) By: Ben When: Sep 27, 2004 | view comment >> | Comments: On 9/23, Thursday, a biner with a few nuts fell well over 100' between Green Spur and Rewritten from the finger crack above the left angling traverse on the "4th" pitch(above Red Ledge). They didn't make it to the ground. I'm not looking to get them back but want to warn whomever finds them to use at your own risk. I'm not totally versed on the policy for using dropped nuts so am playing it safe. They took quite a fall.

Location: CO : Boulder : Boulder Canyon : Mine Hole Crag : Sofa Kingdom (5.10) By: Ben When: May 19, 2004 | view comment >> | Comments: A couple of things: As others have pointed out, this route is not 5.10. I've taken first time climbers on this, and they've gotten up it fine on TR. 5.8 at the most but still a very fun climb. A couple of saftey precautions: be very mindful of loose rocks both on the approach and around the belay station. Also, if you decide to rap off the route to save wear and tear on your rope from the awful sloping ledge before the last bolt, be sure not to toss your rope anywhere near the nasty pine tree wi... more >>

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : RMNP - Mixed/Ice : Emerald Lake / Tyndall Gorg... : Flattop Mountain - S side : Dragon's Tail Couloir (WI2 M2) By: Ben When: Apr 4, 2004 | view comment >> | Comments: Matt, Shaun, and I went up to attempt Dragons Tail on Saturday. Our first snow pit immediately above the lake gave us the go ahead with 6-8 inches of new snow that seemed to be bonded to well consolidated snow below it. Our second pit, parallel with the toe of the buttress, however, revealed 2 feet plus of new, sugary, snow on top of well consolidated snow. The bottom of the new snow consisted of graupel that wasn't bonded to the layer below at all. Needless to say we made the decision to bail. ... more >>

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : RMNP - Mixed/Ice : Glacier Gorge By: Ben When: Mar 26, 2004 | view comment >> | Comments: I hiked in to Glacier Gorge on Thursday, 3/25, up to Black Lake. All Mixed up is mostly gone with a few pieces of rotten looking ice scattered about. West Gully is still well in but has a significant amount of snow on it. The trail is rotting as well. Expect a lot of post-holing without snowshoes unless you can follow the trail precisely. The problem with following it, though, is that up high it heads into the stream bed which was flowing under the snow and I'm sure will contiue to grow.

Location: CO : Fort Collins : Horsetooth Reservoir By: Ben When: Mar 7, 2004 | view comment >> | Comments: I heard that there are some plans for the city of Fort Collins to enact a fee to climb at rotary park. I guess our tax money isn't good enough for those who see an opportunity to make a profit. Fight the man.

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : RMNP - Mixed/Ice : Emerald Lake / Tyndall Gorg... By: Ben When: Nov 3, 2003 | view comment >> | Comments: My buddy Matt and I climbed a couloir next to the Tyndall Glacier last weekend. It was fantastic neve for about 800'+. We don't know if it has a name, though. Anyone have any idea about that or is it considered a branch of the glacier? High winds on top of the divide, 50-60 mph. The glacier has a lot of exposed grey ice. The only new snow was a light dusting that fell while we were there.

Location: CO : CO Ice & Mixed : RMNP - Mixed/Ice : Long's Peak/Mt. Meeker Cirq... : The Flying Dutchman (5.4 WI2-3) By: Ben When: Sep 19, 2003 | view comment >> | Comments: Climbed Flying Dutchman on 9.14.03. Really not in condition. Thought it might be a little better following the inclement weather. Had to scramble a ways to get on the snow which was really solid; however, screws bottomed out quickly. Lots of exposed rock and gravel. Lots of frozen kitty litter. Very loose. Crux ice was only a few inches thick and melting. Long day but the weather was perfect.
