Comments: This is a ridiculous conversation through and through. As the FA Zach has the right not to propose a grade for a number of reasons. I know Zach's reasons for not giving a grade are very personal and as such I respect his decision to not see this climb as merely just a grade. For him it represented something a bit more than that. If the community here at Mountain Project can't accept and support that, then you're going to alienate one of Minnesota's staunchest climbing advocates.

It seems Mounta... more >>

Comments: I am inclined to believe your source, Randy. He is very credible and I put alot of stock in his opinion. As someone who was climbing at Red Wing when this line was first bolted and subsequently chipped, I would take him at his word.

Comments: Randy, I agree with you on Advanced Birding and Preemptive Strike not being 12c.. Preemptive is barey 12b, Advanced Birding is barely 12a.. in my book atleast.

Yeah, I do think Rock Pigs is better than Mississippi. Mississippi has a giant standing no hands rest midway through making it not very sustained at all. With that rest, I have a hard time even calling Mississippi 12c to be honest.

Comments: This is a really good route. Really fun movement all the way through. In my opinion I think it is better than Mississippi Burning, Preemptive Strike, and Advanced Birding. The best 12c at Red Wing in my mind.

Comments: Instead of using the two finger gaston, go right hand straight up to a good right hand crimp, then go left hand to the good gaston way out left. Bring feet up high and drop right hand into a small pebbly pinch/crimp near the two finger gaston. Drop left hand down to a really low very positive crimp. Lock this off and get right hand into the sidepull your left hand was just on. Get feet under you and stand straight up to the small crimps. Lock off to the jug.

  • Begin shameless promotion*

For those that are interested, by the way, there will be a specific Willow River Guidebook coming out in the next couple months or so. The guidebook will be very useful because the nature of Willow and its linkups make it very hard deciphering where certain lines go. There will also be information in the guidebook about climbs not yet listed on Mountain Project. You'll be able to pick up the book from escapeclimbing.com before also being released to Vertical Ende... more >>

Comments: If you are aiming for the no-handed knee bar, try working your leg in their sideways.. It's awkward, but if you get it just right it will lock you in really nicely. Doing the knee bar this way can be size dependent.

Comments: The knee-bar is accommodating to most leg lengths. It is all about finagling it in there with the right application of slopey feet. I agree with Randy, however, that the knee-bar wastes more energy than it saves.

Getting into it and comfortably holding it might be nice for a momentary break on the arms, but it burns alot of energy in the rest of your body. My recommendation is to shake out on the holds in the bottom of the hueco. Whether you use the knee bar or not, the grade remains unaffecte... more >>

Comments: This is one of the most direct lines at Willow. Really fun, engaging crux sequence to link into Tsunami. Hard to read, but not so bad once you figure out what you are doing.
