Here we see the "virga" rainfall common in Arizona and other southwestern areas. Cause you know, when it rains, it pours (but evaporates a few hundred feet above your head, damn!).

Somewhere near Camp Verde -- May 2008
A handful of ancient Salado ruins exist in the Sierra Ancha. Here I sit in the doorway to an airy rock "porch" off a multi-story cliff dwelling. Inside, 700 year old wooden beams still cross the roof in some places and a few other artifacts remain unpilfered.

The hike is strenuous and the route finding somewhat difficult to access this remote gem. The Salado people weren't kidding around when they decided to build this thing.

May 2008
