Comments: Bouldering near Canon...There are the boulders at Bootlegger, west up US Hwy 50. They are listed here under "Arkansas River Boulders".
Also, heading out to Shelf, before the road crosses 4-Mile Creek, you'll see a little turn out on the left. Park here and walk across the road and up a little hill, there is a nice sized boulder near the top with a few good problems on it.

Comments: I don't know if that place west of Cotopaxi has a name. We always call it "the place near Cotopaxi". I believe these routes were put up by the rafting outfitter nearby called Rock and Row. They offer climbing/rafting trips and this little area is their climbing place.
I believe there are 4-5 routes from the 5.9 to 5.10+ range. Literally right off US Hwy 50, this is a convenient place to do some quick climbs.

Comments: Climbed this yesterday with some friends. We never did find the anchors on this one and had to do some interesting down climbing. We used "the Book" which told us it had 7 bolts, appears to have more now (13?). Definitely harder than 5.9 at the top as we climbed the Opportunist and Enterprise prior to this (solid 5.9's) and cruised up them.
Some beta on location of anchors would be nice. It seemed to have a 13 foot lead out at the top to the anchors. Is this right?

Comments: Okay, we can all agree the Gorge is not for climbing. What then? Rafting!!!
However, if you do decide to climb, remember, it is illegal to cross the tracks, and the bridge and surrounding land is owned by Canon City. So, really there is no legal way to climb here, sans the GoFast Games.
Keep an eye out here in the future as a friend and I have been discussing putting up routes on Sunshine Wall. Climb a river Gods face anyone?

Comments: This area is known as Bootleggers by the local raft guides.
Bootlegger Canyon is across the river, about a 1/2 mile up is an old bootleggers' cabin.

Location: CO : Caņon City : Shelf Road : Cactus Cliff

Comments: The road to Cactus Cliff is permanently closed by the BLM. This road was build by Tezak to allow access to the people that own homes back there. It was considered too dangerous to allow access to the general public, and too cost prohibitive to make the road safe. They do intend to improve parking at the gate. Don't park on Shelf Road itself, this endangers other motorists and is illegal. Alternatively you can park at the campground and hike down to Cactus Cliff.
One benefit is that maybe this wi... more >>
