A view of the main summit from the south summit. Note the climbers on the horn pitch in the lower-left part of the photograph. Taken during the "Ship Rock 30th anniversary ascent" in 1969, just before the closure.

Meet Sheila. In exchange for permission from the local grazing permit holder to do this route, Luke and I did a massive clean-up of grafitti (we painted over it with rock-colored paint), trash, and junk around the bottom of the East Face.

This is the left side of the Black Bowl. We basically soloed this entire section all the way to the Sierra col. The reason for the rope in the photograph is I was too lazy to untie, so Bill and I simul-soled. I would say this is the steepest section that does NOT warrant a rope except for the last 20 feet to the Sierra col.

Luke Laeser in Long's Couloir, Shiprock.
He had two ropes on him. The thing on the right is some kind of wire that was strung up and down the couloir for hundreds of feet.
© Cameron M. Burns
