Looking up at Crown Pass from the Hanes Valley. From the pass, Crown Mountain is on the right, Grouse Mountain on the left. This snowfield is quite a bit bigger than it looks in the picture and can be fun to kick steps up if the conditions are right and can last into June. In March and April this area is quite dangerous due to the very deep snow being undercut by water running along the ground. Numerous injuries and rescues have resulted from people planning to hike the Hanes Valley loop and not realizing that even if there's no snow at the trailhead it can be very serious up to the pass. A few years ago there was a rescue of fifteen or so people from a school hiking group.

Crown Mountain and The Camel in March 2004.

Sat standing near the summit of Crown Mountain with the Hanes Valley in the background. The detached rock formation over his right shoulder is "The Camel." While this is primarily a great hiking destination, there are a number of rock routes on the camel as well as a long one called "The Widowmaker Arete" coming up from Hanes Valley. This is climbing that is technically accessible by public transit from anywhere in Vancouver since you can get to the base of Grouse Mountain by bus, take the tram up, and then hike the two or three hours to Crown Mountain.

The Lions from the Cleveland Dam (the Capilano Reservoir) in North Vancouver. This is the view seen from much of Vancouver. The one on the left is the West Lion. Some of the snow stays through to about June. Although it looks like the logical way, they are not approached up the valley in the picture. They are approached either from the ridge on the left (Howe Sound Crest) or from behind (Lion's Bay). This photo was snagged from Wikipedia.

From the summit of the West Lion looking back at Vancouver. The lake is the Capilano Reservoir. The city is lost in the haze, but the body of water beyond the reservoir is the Burrard Inlet. This watershed is essentially off-limits.

From the summit of the West Lion looking southwest. The fog is streaming into Howe Sound around Bowen Island and other islands. Vancouver Island is visible in the hazy distance and the prominent land on the right is part of the Sunshine Coast (technically on the mainland, but not accessible by car except by taking a ferry).

The East Lion as seen from part way up the West Lion (looking northeast).

Looking up at the West Lion while on the approach from Lions Bay. The notch is prominent feature of the standard route (crossed from the right). There is also a route that goes straight up the notch from this point, but I doubt it's popular.

Ted Lawson finishing the return trip along the traverse. The person at the upper left of the image is not at the start of the downclimb; the downclimb starts down and left of him. The knotted rope is just visible if you look carefully.

Shot of west face of West Lion from similar spot as previous image. This was from a slightly too early in the season attempt. My running shoes took me the ridge line but no further.

If you miss the turnoff on the trail and you continue up the main trail, this is where you end up. This picture is looking southeast over Indian Arm. Belcarra is on the far shore and on the right horizon you see the buildings of Burnaby or Port Moody, just east of Simon Fraser University.
